Description

Stone, with its massive +60% Faster Hit Recovery, can singlehandedly cut most characters' hit recovery frames nearly in half. That said, FHR needs can often be addressed by some combination of Spirit and Charms of Balance.

Stone has a remarkably high Enhanced Defense value for an armor of its level requirement. However, a Prudence placed in an ethereal base will provide a comparable Defense value.

Smoke is a more effective (and less expensive) solution for shoring up subpar resistances, while Duress will provide comparable defensive benefits alongside significant offensive benefits for weapon-based characters.

Constructing this runeword in an ethereal bugged (legacy D2 only)
Sacred Armor
can produce a massive amount of defense exceeding 5k.

If you can't afford a
Eth
Fortitude for your merc, then this is a viable choice till then. Pref in a socket
Eth
Sacred Armor
.

Stone is not a bad armor. But has the same problem of Gloom, is more expensive and less effective than Smoke and Duress.

The fact that Stone provides +16 strenght is often overlooked when comparing it with Smoke, Duress and Prudence. It shines early in the ladder, when 4os ethereal Cryptic Axes are not available for cheap. Of course, this is no end game armor, but +16 strenght gives you way earlier access to Insight in ethereal
Colossus Voulge
, being the cheapest and easiest available of the ethereal elite polearms. Yes, of course, you can just add a
Perfect Amethyst
to your
Tal Rasha's Horadric Crest
or get lucky with
Andariel's Visage
to match its requirements, but this blocks one of the most OP Merc builds consisting of Act 2
Prayer
Merc, Insight (
Meditation
) and Cure (
Cleansing
).

This is a decent non-
Eth
body armour for Hell playthrough (especially if you make use of its
Clay Golem
charges), though by the time you find the runes required, and you are playing online, there are better options out there you can trade for.

As for A2 mercenary and the Strength argument, there are always other decent options, like
Duriel's Shell
, which also comes with a sweet "cannot be frozen" attribute.

Overall a low to mid tier runeword with some applications, and the only accessible/budget option for a 4 socketed armour, but nothing to write home about.

Better spend your runes somewhere else.
