The Stone of Jordan is one of the most infamous items in the Diablo universe. It's a strong ring that is sought after for use by casters because of its + to skills and large mana boost. This is one of the two rings with +all skills bonus, the other being the Bul-Kathos' Wedding Band.
It's also used in the process of spawning the Diablo Clone and acquiring the Annihilus charm.

Historical note: In early versions of D2, unique rings didn't use a drop table - instead, when a unique ring rolled it would be a Manald Heal if you didn't already have one, then a Nagelring if you had a Manald but no Nagel, and then finally a SOJ if you had both. (Those were the only three unique rings in v1.00)
Players who knew this mechanic thus kept a Manald and a Nagel in their stash at all times, so every unique ring drop was guaranteed to be a SOJ. (Note that the stash back then was only 24 spaces, with no shared stash, so you'd only waste two spaces on fairly weak rings if you knew the rules on how unique ring drops worked.)
This is completely irrelevant to modern D2, and changed by patch 1.09 at the latest (August 2001, when Raven Frost, Dwarf Star, and Bul-Kathos' Wedding Band were added to the game), but it's a fun little look into how this game worked way back in the day.
