Description

Infinity is a popular runeword that is considered best in slot for Act 2 Mercenaries when built in an appropriate base polearm, due to its powerful Conviction aura.

The Conviction aura reduces enemy resistance by -85%. but against immune monsters it's divide by 5. Meaning it only reduce resistance by -17% against immunities.

The Conviction aura can break immunities from monsters with max 116% resistance.

The -(45-55)% To Enemy Lightning Resistance on Infinity doesn't work for the player while equipped on mercenary.

Lightning immune monsters are the easiest to break because most of the time they have 105/110/115% Lightning resistance.

As of Patch 2.4, Infinity can also be built in any Spear, including Amazon Spears.

Infinity is BiS for an Act 2 mercenary if you are using an elemental damage dealing build like a Lightning Sorceress. Popular bases (all Ethereal) for Infinity are: Giant Thresher, Thresher, Great Poleaxe, and Cryptic Axe.
7
Two important bits to consider that new user's might not be aware of:

Infinity's Conviction aura does not affect Physical, Poison or Magic damage.

Additionally, the -% To Enemy Lightning Resist modifier does not have any effect on Assassin's Traps, as they are considered summons. The Conviction aura is still effective, however! Since patch 2.6 the assassin also benefits from -% enemy lightning resist

Whilst most use the weapon for the aura - and don’t care for the actual damage of the merc, there are some things to consider to maximize the effectiveness of this expensive rune word.
Only use an ethereal version for the weapon, top two being Thresher or Giant Thresher providing most DPS (are are worth most for re-sale). Some use a Colossus Voulge, because it is easier to obtain the guaranteed 4 sockets through Lazruk - however, it is not the perfect base for a merc (high requirements, so you cannot use it before your merc is ~LVL90 and slow attack speed, minimizing DPS), thereby potentially reducing the re-sell value.

Important note here for choosin the proper base for your Infinity:

To maximize the dps and crush/ps you choose Thresher or Giant Thresher base - but to benefit from it, Andariel's Visage your merc's wearin MUST include 15%ias jewel - to reach off-weapon ias 35% with Fortitude or 80% with Treachery.

If the Mask isn't iased - you have 20% and/or 65% off-weapon ias on your merc - in this case, Great Poleaxe provides equal fpa to that of both threshers, even surpassin overall merc dps because of more consistent damage output, especially with high damage roll.

Short version: Iased Mask - you go for threshers. Non-iased Mask - you want gpa instead.

It doesn't break only lightning.
It does break fire, just not all monsters.
Fun fact, Infinity doesn't break every lightning immune either! Just most of them.
I have seen it break a couple cold imunes in hell but it seems impossibly rare *random, less useful than vs fire.
Another fun fact.
Infinity is still beneficial to people who use fire and cold damage VS non-imunes and imunes that can get broken.
Having a fire/cold sorc, lightning/fire sorc and lightning/cold sorc myself, I was blown away & shocked even. (hah) by just how helpful Infinity can be. Just the damage & crushing blow was a big upgrade VS even a perfect Eth Insight.
10/10, will even roll a 3rd one.
7
Another option to roll Infinity is an Eth Mancatcher, don’t be fooled by the meh damage. Mancatcher is a faster base than Thresher, so it’s a good option to improve your merc’s survivability (more attacks = more life leach) as well as more often procing crushing blow. It’s also way more common and has lower stat requirements!

There is a bug in the game when facing an enemy with level 12 Conviction aura, the negative effect of the enemy's aura persists on you (or your merc) until you take Infinity off and put it back on.

This was fixed with patch 2.8

A slvl 20 Chain Lightning deals 1-281 Lightning Damage and can hit up to 9 targets.

A slvl 12 Conviction aura affects a 13.3 yard radius, lowers Defense by 83% and imposes a -85% penalty to affected units' Fire, Cold, and Lightning Resistances.

A slvl 21 Cyclone Armor will absorb a combined total of 280 Fire, Cold, and/or Lighting Damage before expiring.
7
The odds of getting a perfect roll is 1/781 or 0.13%.

If you play lightning sorceress (e.g. Nova), wielding this yourself is also a good option, making the minus elr a high value.

In that case, the regular Scythe is a good option (and not Eth to replenish your Cyclone Armor charges used occasionnally)

Since Fire Warlock cannot get Conviction Bind Demon anymore, this forces Warlock to rely on this runeword once again

That being said, Metalgrid allows me to use Iron Golem by using my Insight polearm to regenerate my mana again
