Lore

When a Paladin undertakes a crusade to banish evil, he is permitted to call upon the just souls of past crusades.

Thus summoned, the spirits of the honorably vanquished manifest themselves and lend their energies to the weapons of the Paladin.

The Runeword Kingslayer (axes and swords with 4 sockets) grants a lvl 1
Vengeance
Oskill.

Oskills can be used by any class, but the skill level bonus is limited to 3 levels for the native class. Oskill levels can be increased like native skill levels, including "+skill (native class only)" bonuses.

The bonus elemental damage is based on your weapon’s damage, and any +min/max damage from your other gear. So while the +damage from war travellers, rings, amulets and charms work, the +damage from Grief or your strength does not.

At the risk of stating the obvious, it is generally preferable to invest in
Resist Fire
,
Resist Cold
, and
Resist Lightning
rather than to invest in
Salvation
if you are trying to increase the damage of
Vengeance
. The reasons are threefold.

First, simple observation will show that the Resist auras will increase
Vengeance
damage by 10%, whereas
Salvation
will only increase it by 6%.

Second,
Resist Fire
,
Resist Cold
, and
Resist Lightning
all have a passive benefit of increasing the maximum resistance the Paladin can benefit from by +0.5% per hard point invested in the corresponding Resist aura.

Third, while
Salvation
is an powerful aura, an Avenger (a paladin specializing in
Vengeance
) will most likely use the
Conviction
aura an overwhelming majority of the time, making heavy investment in
Salvation
superfluous.
