Description

Call To Arms is a very popular endgame rune word. It provides
Battle Command
,
Battle Orders
and
Battle Cry
oskills, normally exclusive for barbarians.

Most characters use Call To Arms just for
Battle Command
and
Battle Orders
buffs (and therefore make it in weapons with low requirements), although its other affixes, such as ED, IAS and life steal allows it to be used as main weapon, until we have a better option.

To maximize the buffs, make Call To Arms in one-handed weapon and pair with Spirit shield for +2 skills (or, if the
Monarch
is too heavy, any other shield with +1 skills, such as Splendor,
Lidless Wall
,
Sigon's Guard
). Follow the same cast order as barbarians:
Battle Command
twice (so the second cast is buffed by +1 skill) and then
Battle Orders
.

Since the skill bonuses are oskills, they are limited to +3 for barbarians. Use two much cheaper "Echoing" +3 warcries weapon (can be bought from NPCs) instead, which can later be replaced by Heart of the Oak (also +3 skills, and FCR).

"*Call To Arms: Barbarians are capped at +3 to the skills
Battle Command
,
Battle Orders
, and
Battle Cry
. If a character gets an oskill bonus to a skill that class "owns," the bonus is restricted to a maximum of +3. If a Barbarian is dual-wielding Call To Arms runeword weapons, then the effective maximum bonus from two CtA is +5 (+3 oskill bonus and +1 to All Skills from each Call To Arms). This is all intentional, in order to balance these items." -
Arreat Summit

Therefore, a Barbarian should use a 3+/3+/3+ CtA and +3 All Skills HotO(Heart of the Oak Runeword) or +3 Warcries Weapon on the weapon switch to get +7Battle Command/+7Battle Orders/+7Battle Cry.

If you build CTA for a Paladin, try to find a
War Scepter
,
Divine Scepter
or
Caduceus
with automod +3 to Holy
Shield. You can the use Lazruk for guaranteed 5sockets. Make sure the iLVL is sufficiently high, or you end up with less sockets ;)

This saves you the root points in
Holy Shield
(and skills for reaching it) whilst building your character.

Sadly, your only customers for selling it are limited to the paladin class.

Edit mod : the idea is great, but
Holy Shield
is a skill (and as far as I know the only one) that cannot spawn on these bases (or with chances lower than rolling a
Zod
).
Leaving the comment so that no one (like I did) looks for this one desperately.
7
For all other Classes, best Base is an
Eth
Flail
(for style) or
Eth
Crystal Sword
.
7
Due to the large span for rolls on CTA stats, it typically makes sense for online players to buy a premade CTA - it will be cheaper than the expensive runes needed to build the runeword.
7
My personal favorite base for CtA is the
Double Axe
. It has the same low Strength requirement as the
Crystal Sword
, but it has a maximum of five sockets, meaning
Larzuk
can more easily provide a suitable base. Furthermore, unlike the
Crystal Sword
and
Phase Blade
, which have a number of other uses, there are very few circumstances where a character will go out of their way to wield the visually distinct
Double Axe
, meaning it will be easier to determine at a glance whether you are holding your CtA or your main weapon on a wider variety of characters.
