Description
A few years back my wife and I made plans for travel across the U.S. as soon as our children are old enough to leave unattended. A perk of my employment is I’m off for most of the summer (June through Aug), and my wife’s employment allows her to bank sick days and holidays. So here I am without my gaming rig. My laptop was purchased for me by my wife and it isn’t made for gaming, or so she thought. It’s an i5 Iris XE laptop, no optical drive, and with only 250 GB SSD drive, and a 17.3” IPS screen.
Before we hit the road I purchased two 1 TB USB 3.0 SSD drives, and I copied the install keys into a word file and emailed it to myself as an attachment. I had already found a place online, the Internet Archive, where I could download an ISO for each of the discs, and yes it’s perfectly legal. I acquired the ISOs, mounted them, and with my install keys successfully installed them to my USB SSD drives. So here I am in the middle of nowhere in an RV playing Diable 2 LOD v1.14d. Works great even on an under powered laptop.
Links to the Internet Archive in case anyone is interested. It’s a legal and trusted site.

How loudly did her eyes roll once she learned you figured out how to play D2 on the "non-gaming" laptop she bought you?mhlg wrote: 5 months agoMy laptop was purchased for me by my wife and it isn’t made for gaming, or so she thought.
I'm willing to accept other forms of currency. Like Tokens, Keys, Perfect Gems, and certain minor runes in lieu of my asking price. I'm also willing to accept rune combinations that add up to my asking price.
Wasn't there a way to copy some additional game files so you wouldn't need CDs/mounted isos?
All prices are negotiable. All trades are Non-Ladder (unless explictly stated).
Please comment on trades or send messages before sending a friend request. I'm not always on Bnet, I might miss them.

I think she's long past being surprised at my PC resourcefulness.

I went with full install but the game still prompts for a CD or in this case a mounted ISO. Remember this is I believe a 2001 release, and It's not much of a bother. The important thing is that it works.SuperIllu wrote: 5 months agoWasn't there a way to copy some additional game files so you wouldn't need CDs/mounted isos?
Archive.org is such a valuable resource for so many research and archival projects. I'm glad they're providing access to ISOs of ancient software. There's nothing questionable legally with that because the license to use the software is what you pay for in the form of CD keys, not the physical media or files.
Your screenshot of the old game looks so much better than the legacy graphics in D2R. In comparison, the legacy graphics are oversaturated and smeared like a watercolor because they said to hell with upscaling. This is why I've never been able to play D2R with the legacy graphics beyond trying it out in the act towns. It looks like a blurry mess and the motion is awful.

My current resolution is 800 X 600 but that's enough to look good on a 17.3" laptop screen.

Remembering the good old days of " Strafe lock" and when Diablo was a cute red. Sort of like in the image.
You didn't have to, you can download D2 and LoD installers directly from Blizzard. They are a bit hidden (so you rather buy and install D2R instead), but here they are.mhlg wrote: 5 months agoI had already found a place online, the Internet Archive, where I could download an ISO for each of the discs, and yes it’s perfectly legal. Act 5, Normal Anya dropped this which won' t have you all blushing with envy but it should be enough to get me through normal. Now what to put in its sockets? Remember this is Single player LOD patch 1.14D.
Two Sol might work well...
Gives you really reliably high damage level.
Just a pity it wasn't a ED% overall instead of just undead.

I travel for work, and in my case it's all about having a "PC" that works with hotel TVs. I have been using an Alienware Alpha for years like this....and it even barely handles remaster. I am currently typing this on that PC in a garage in the place I am renting near my current jobsite. I am soon due for a new desktop PC, and my older one will become the travel PC. No sense in taking the expensive stuff on the road with me. You never know when the hotel staff will get grabby.
Make any offer whatsoever of any runes, tokens, keys essences, pgems.

A Dol from the Halls of Pain is now my top rune drop. I thought about adding a couple of Ith for +9 maximum damage but I would prefer to bring up the bottom. The other issue is attack speed. Through all 5 acts so far all I've found was a single pair of Sanders Taboo 20% ias and a pair of Sanders Riprap 40% run speed. The ancients is all that's left but that'll have to wait. Unless it rains some more? I don't have two P Rubbies but i do have two Ort which I've been eyeballing but not quite ready to jump.
So now I'm curious what would actually happen with the damage output because I've personally never done this before on a low level weapon with a tight damage range or even thought to look up examples of other people doing this. Two Sol runes plus the +2 min damage that's on mhlg's Anya reward produces this in D2Planner:
PC | Softcore Non-Ladder | US Eastern Time (UTC-4)
Expansion Ladder Season 1 Level 99 (#115 Amazon, #584 Overall)

The actual damage should be the inverse - i.e., 19-29. Via Amazon Basin's article on Minimum Damage, I found a link to the Amazon Basin forums with the following info:
https://www.theamazonbasin.com/forums/i ... nt-1505332For ranged physical attack damage, if minimum damage = maximum damage then min = max; if min > max, then min becomes max and max becomes min. So 1-2 physical damage with +5 Minimum Damage and +100% Damage will display 12-13, but 4-12 (12-4) is actually applied.
I'm in CET (Central European Time), so that's UTC+1 normally and UTC+2 during DST.
My profile says Ladder, but I play both Ladder and Non-Ladder.
My profile says Softcore, but I play both Softcore and Hardcore.
My Holy Grail Tracker is for Offline Hardcore.

If you want a portable device for D2 (other than a laptop), why not Nintendo Switch? You'd be independent from external screens and even temporarily from power sources.SayWhat wrote: 5 months agoI travel for work, and in my case it's all about having a "PC" that works with hotel TVs. There is a similar bug, with damage bonuses from a jewel.ShadowHeart wrote: 5 months agoThe actual damage should be the inverse - i.e., 19-29. Via Amazon Basin's article on Minimum Damage, I found a link to the Amazon Basin forums with the following info:

I wondered about the numbers and I figured maybe a Sol for +9 to minimum and an Ith for +9 to maximum might be a better combo. I would only be doing this for ancients because I will be able to improve everything once I get to nightmare, so I'm going to go with increased elemental damage instead.Trang Oul wrote: 5 months agoIf you want a portable device for D2 (other than a laptop), why not Nintendo Switch?
