Know any items with names in need of translation?

Since there are some items with uncommon names borrowed from other languages or that I think would not be understood by the majority of players, e.g. who the items in the Heaven's Brethren set are named after and why they're associated with teaching, et al, I'm trying to track down info on all of them. If there's an item whose name is in need of translation or explanation please feel free to PM me or respond to this thread.

I'll try to keep an updated list of items with translated or explained names here so that anyone who's more knowledgeable can easily find my comments and correct me.

Don't really have anything to add, but I can't believe it's called

Carin Shard. For ~20 years I've always read it as "cairn."

This is like finding out the Stamina Shrine icon is a foot when D2R came out.

All I can say is 'yes'. Do all of them.

Consider translating also foreign base item names. Those are historic/regional names of specific weapons, sometimes just a base name in foreign language (such as "Zweihänder" = "two-hander", "corona" = "crown").

Thanks for the idea. Some of them are already done but I'll add the rest as I come across them.

Bing Sz Wang (unique

Dacian Falx) means "Icy Death" or "Ice Death King" in Chinese. Both translations have the same pronunciation so it's difficult to be sure which one is correct without asking the devs

Crainte Vomir would be an interesting one to do

I'm glad someone's already commented on that one's page because I know the literal translation and it doesn't make a lot of sense

Fun fact:

Breast Plate is translated as "

Cuirass" in russian version, therefore it's impossible to distinguish these base types in game. They both are named "Кираса".

Same in Polish: both

Crown (normal) and

Corona (elite) are translated as "Korona".
And even (almost) in Engish:

Demon Head (normal voodoo head) and

Demonhead (elite helm).

One of our fellow users created a tool to find and compare strings across translations. I'm pretty sure such oversights are common, as usually translators just get a list of strings to translate with little or no guide how they are actually used in the game.

Same issue in French for

Breast Plate and

Cuirass, and for

Demon Head and

Demonhead.

They found another word for

Corona though (

Corona is

Grand Crown - not a beer! - and Fronteau a

Corona, I think)

Sounds a lot more like "long winds" in Norwegian.
And it's a

Crossbow, which is winded up...
So it's likely a terrible pun on longwinded...

Sorry for the late response. I didn't see any notifications that anyone was still commenting in this thread.

I'll change the phrasing on my swordfish comment. I wasn't trying to say that it only meant swordfish. That was just intended as an extra fact.

Knappogue messaged me about Langer Briser as well. We both knew langer to mean swaddle or something similar. That part defiinitely doesn't line up. Briser is absolutely still break as far as I can tell and reliable sources like the Cambridge Dictionary's French > English translator confirm that part. Being an arbalest, which is a large crossbow, and having the knockback property it does make sense that it breaks bones but otherwise I'm relying on a French D2R community member and that as I recall bone break is the translation of the item's name in the French client, though admittedly I can't find a screenshot of that anymore (I really need to keep my notes from when I research these things) but I know localizations can be wildly inaccurate or just strange like renaming Pindleskin to Picaillon. All that said, do you know the translation of the weapon's name? If nothing else I could amend the comment to say that it seems to be bone break.

I'll preface this by saying I know nothing of Norwegian but neither long winded's translation of langdryg nor long winds' translation of lange vinder seem like close enough matches to langer briser, even after hearing their pronunciations. Needing to wind up an arbelest would line up with a long winded pun though. Do you have any more evidence for that idea?

Pilum is the latin name of the javalin in the roman army.

Rondel is a

Spiculum is also a roman javalin, but used later than the

Poignard seems to be just French for

Dagger (though I don't speak French)
