Can be used to make Runewords:

If you already have Spirit in a
Monarch
(strength 156), would it make sense to go with
Archon Plate
since you already have the strength for it (looks not withstanding)?

I used a
Dusk Shroud
only to, eventually, be talked into getting the strength for a
Monarch
. I really wish I'd built the Engima in the
Archon Plate
I had.

Use 260-261 def 3os
Mage Plate
for ur nigma. Never a mistake, bc it's:
1) easy to acquire;
2) cheap to fix;
3) decent look;
4) keeps you from spendin any hard str points in almost every case = thickest azz
5) and still over 1k def with whatever roll - good enough for self-use.

I went with an
Archon Plate
because I'm not that big on esthetics and I figured the strength requirements for most builds are going to easily reach 103, especially once you add an anni and a torch.

Please post offer in item trade before adding me on Bnet, I'm in EST time zone (E Coast U.S)

Same as Asha :
Mage Plate
, non sup for the repair costs annoyance with max or almost max defense.

My necro level 93 that way can have 0 point invested in STR and that allows with Sandstorm, Enigma, Anni, Torch and some STR on one ring to wear Spirit (with just 156 or 157 STR!).

Superior exceptional armors have cheap repair costs per durability. It's the elites that are 20-50k per, if superior.

15 %ED
Mage Plate
is the MVP, anyone can use it with just torch+anni.
Archon Plate
is a trap that will have you spend 33-48 stat points into strength while simultaneously wasting the strength per level potential it offers as you need at most 156 (
Monarch
, 146 for ethereal on weapon swap) while
Archon Plate
Enigma will propel you to 170+. For your ~38-point investment and 15+ str overflow you get extra ~300 def which translates to about 1 % chance of being hit. If you go with
Mage Plate
, you can reach the 156 with around 20-30 points spent in strength. This is mostly a druid/amazon/assassin case where you will want to use
Monarch
with Enigma on and there is some leeway in the prefered base.

Summary:
Paladin =
Mage Plate
unless you REALLY need the extra def (multiplied by
Holy Shield
) from archon.
Barbarian =
Mage Plate
unless you have a caster build that uses Spirit
Monarch
. Then same as paladin (multiplied by
Shout
in this case).
Amazon =
Archon Plate
for spending ~43 str points to get 300 def, or
Mage Plate
for spending ~26 str points on top of what Enigma gives you to equip
Monarch
.
Assassin = dtto
Druid = dtto with 48 and 31 resp.
Necromancer =
Mage Plate
(if you are using an ugly shield over a severed head you are no necro :P)
Sorceress = Why are you wearing an Enigma?
Dusk Shroud
= Fine choice, if you are a
Monarch
user and you prefer the look. +~250 def over
Mage Plate
. No strength wasted to overflow.

This is all assuming a 20 stat anni + a 20 stat torch.

If you get a PM offer, post it in the trade. Promote healthy competition instead of settling for less. ;)

For more info on repair costs for Mage Plates (if starting at 0 dura), one can check the page about Enigma, there are screenshots there, and know that with Archon it will be much more :

= To show your non-conformity. Just don't bring barbarian into the mix.
Sharktooth Armor
= If you want your assassin to look fabulous.
Sacred Armor
= If you like oxymorons.

This is all assuming a 20 stat anni + a 20 stat torch.
That's a good write up, but I would say it depends on other aspects of your final build as well including actual level. I've spent, for example, only two extra points in strength because of other gear on Assassin which isn't at level 99 yet and probably never will be such a high level. (Well, being that I like the numbers to be multiples of five I didn't spend any extra points.) My paladin is building towards level 79 so had to spend way more points just to get to Vortex. (Which, the Vortex may have been a mistake. I'm thinking of going something different and saving the extra points.) I am glad you posted this though as it is a good reminder of how the numbers can lie to you--unless begin buffed the extra defense isn't exactly stellar--once you get down in the details.

Biased AF but..
Archon Plate
. Always. For any class or build or any non-merc armor runeword for that matter.

Sure, you can save a couple str points (sometimes) if you go with an otherwise worse armor but for some builds, str = dmg so it isn't wasted either way. Plus AP str req + Enigma bonus for the most part also means you end up with enough str (or just barely under) for the elite version of everything else, meaning you gain not only the def from MP to AP but also from upgrading all of your other gear.
Sure, for many a build, all of that extra def still just leaves you as a paper weight in the end but f it..the handful of extra life points you get by not investing the str don't exactly make a noticeable difference either.

More of a matter of Principle for me I guess..if it isn't elite, it won't be equipped. The only exception to that is my ladder char for whom I couldn't care less. Gets tossed post-season anyways. :)

Plus MP/AP happen to also offer the best looks on most classes so..win win. (Yup, entirely subjective)

I’m interested in the final decision of the original poster! Great discussion and info.

I made my ssf offline Enigma in a 259 (non superior)
Mage Plate
, and I love it. Def is fine, no required strength investment, so I goes on basically all my characters, and if I don’t have a spare
Ral
and it needs repairs i don’t need to boot up my gf barb for 15 mins of trav runs
