Hello there,
I have heard on older forum data that if you used a jewel with +ED / + max damage not in a weapon, ED only applies to min damage.
Is that still true ?
Use case : Pally with Grief and its huge flat damage to be increased, 38% ED 14 max damage jewel just purchased - does this Cap my max damage way lower than planned and should I have bought a jewel without the +max dmg (and anything else, MF, dex... instead) ?
Thanks people !

Can do trades on D2R or D2RotW

Correct me if I am wrong, I think it's the ED +Max/Min damage jewel has bug, not only +max one. And if you put that jewel into non-weapon, the ED part will not take affect.
OP
Yeah, the same issue (but conversely) affects if min damage is present, it seems. But as all sources of this seem to date back from before resurrected, not sure it's still valid ?

So, no one tested this recently ?

I just added a 15% IAS 26 ED jewel to my Helm and both are indicated.
ias+ed jewel has no bug, it's the ed+Max/Min jewel on non-weapon bugged.
If i put a jewel with just +30 maximum damage on a Helm, will it be applied to my damage? Thanks
To my knowledge this has not been "patched" or "Fixed" in D2R. Others have tested/posted on forums. Below are the scenarios:
[How does it work, and how can I best avoid it?]
The enhanced damage(ED)/+minimum(min) or +maximum(max) damage(dmg) is a bug where the modifiers on a jewel will not work properly, reducing its efficiency, when socketed in any non-weapon slot. It can cause the x%ED modifier to work in an inproper manner, or not at all.
Fortunately, the ed/dmg bug has long been known, and tested thoroughly. The mechanics for the bug is illustrated by type cases below. Compare these cases with your considered socket choice, and see if it will trigger the bug or not.
Case 1: item has innate +%ED. You socket with a jewel with +max or +min dmg, or both
Example: You have a Circlet/ Coronet/ Tiara/ Diadem with xx%enhanced damage, or a paladin shield with xx% enhanced damage, and you sock a +15 max dmg jewel.
No bug! Will work as intended.
Case 2: You socket an item with a +%ED Jewel. Then you socket another jewel with +max or +min dmg, or both
Example: You have a body armor with 4sox/100life. First you sock a jewel with 40%ed. Then you sock another jewel with +10min and +18max dmg.
No bug! Will work as intended.
Case 3: Item has innate +max dmg. You socket with a +%ED Jewel
Example: you have a Circlet with +12max dmg. You sock a +40%ed and 15%increased attack speed jewel.
Bugged! The %ED only applies to your overall min dmg, not your max dmg
Case 4: Item has innate +Min dmg. You socket with a +%ED Jewel
Example: you have a Circlet with +12min dmg. You sock a +40%ed and 15%increased attack speed jewel]
Bugged! The %ED only applies to your overall max dmg, not your min dmg.
Case 5: You socket item with a +Max Jewel, then you socket with a +%ED Jewel
Example: you have a Diadem with 30% faster run & walk and 3sox, you first sock a +30max dmg jewel, then you sock a +40%ed and 15%increased attack speed jewel.
Bugged! The %ED only applies to your overall min dmg, not your max dmg
Case 6: You socket item with a +Min Jewel, then you socket with a +%ED Jewel
Example: you have a Diadem with 30% faster run & walk and 3sox, you first sock a +18min dmg jewel, then you sock a +40%ed and 15%increased attack speed jewel.
Bugged! The %ED only applies to your overall max dmg, not your min dmg.
Case 7: You socket an item with a %ED/Max Jewel. The %ED only applies to minimum, not maximum
Example: you have a Diadem with 30% faster run & walk and 3sox, you socket a +40%ed +15max dmg jewel.
Bugged! The %ED only applies to your overall min dmg, not your max dmg
Case 8: You socket an item with a %ED/Min Jewel
Example: you have a Diadem with 30% faster run & walk and 3sox, you socket a +40%ed +10min dmg jewel.
Bugged! The %ED only applies to your overall max dmg, not your min dmg.
Case 9: You socket an item with a %ED +Min & +Max Jewel
Example: you have a Diadem with 30% faster run & walk and 3sox, you socket a +30%ed +10min +18max dmg jewel.
Bugged! The %ED doesn't have any effect at all, as it will not apply to either your overall min or max dmg (worst case scenario)!

Good to know. Avoid usage of ed+max / ed-min. Simple enough.
OP
Thanks Theory for clearing this out.
Remember this only happens in non weapon slots.
For Pogitoy: should be good for this socketing. If you have another open socket on the item though, think twice before !

100% - I should have bolded/called that out more prominently. Cheers.Necrarch wrote: 3 years agoThanks Theory for clearing this out.

Bumped because I'm having a hard time understanding this abit, so I just wanna make sure. Just did Colossal Ancients for the first time and got myself a Protector's Stone for my FoH smiter. I have a +2pally skills +20FCR rare Diadem I put it in, so you're telling me the %EnhancedDamage does not apply?

Actually just re-tested this for Protector's Stone yesterday to confirm exactly how it works for that one.
There are two main scenarios for you to consider, depending on your Diadem:
(1) Your Diadem only has 1 socket. In that case, if you socket a Stone in it, the Stone's ED will simply not do anything. The other stats on the Stone will work just fine though.
(2) Your Diadem has 2 sockets. In that case, if you socket a Stone in it, the Stone's ED will still not do anything no matter what, same as scenario 1 BUT if you intend to use an "ED only, no min/max" jewel in the 2nd socket (say ed/IAS), you want to make sure you socket that jewel first and your Stone second. If you put the Stone in first, neither the Stone's nor the jewel's ED will work. If you put the jewel in first and the Stone second, then the jewel's ED will work but the Stone's ED will still not work. So best case, you can make the jewel work at least. Worst case, neither will work.
Until that bug is fixed (if it ever will be...), Protector's Stone ED is effectively an irrelevant roll and might as well not exist in any use case other than socketing it directly into a weapon.
