At first its fun, but after few hours it just becomes so boring I don't want to ever play that class anymore.
Besides, it literally has just 3 builds to choose from: fire/eldritch/miasma.
I always liked theorycrafting, chasing some rare items, putting niche runewords together, but with warlock you have 3 options and only items playing into those options. It almost doesn't benefit from any set items, uniques etc that existed prior to this class, so it seems out of place kind of
Compare that to sorc for example, you can do hyda, Passion melee sorc, Nova, Chain Lightning, meteorb, pure Meteor, blizzard, etc. So much more options
Generally warlock just seems half baked. All the items it has just boost warlock skills even further, and only play into those specific builds
Feels much different/out of place compared to other chars.
Has some potential but feels overpowered, boring and kind of like playing like some unfinished beta version. : P
Luckily sunder charms situation is somewhat better with this patch, I literally stopped playing D2 for a few years bc of sunders and Mosaic (because they invalidated lots of original builds, and Mosaic was plain annoying). Removing Mosaic from ladder was one of the primary reasons i tried it again, but warlock is a disappointment.
It kind of gets to a point where you can get into the game and have gg gear after few hours of play, no need for farming, theorycrafting, doing all the cool builds, so in that sense I think d2r is getting worse over the years.
After few hours and no theorycrafting I had a char that can clear the entire game with no challenge. No need to do any trading, making friends in the game etc. Generally the game starts to lose reasons to come back, and a lot of its social aspect.
D2R had a good start with FOH and some other skills that were improved but now it just goes into a really weird chaotic direction. Feels like dev team is rotating every season, and doesn't have its own ideas besides copying modders and taking community feedback literally.
Shards are ok, but let's be honest they copied PD2 mapping design in an inferior way
So imo, Diablo 2 with sunders before RotW: 3/10
D2 LoD: 10/10
D2 RoTW: 6/10

Just add me on bnet, and ping me if you like my offer
Good news, they are making changes! Check forums.
That said, I think more than 3 builds exist. Fire, Miasma/ Abyss, ES, Cleave/ Mirrored Blades/ Eldritch Blast, pure summoner. Maybe something I'm forgetting.

Huh?
Locks have way more than 3 options.
"eldritch" isn't just 1 option, despite the fact that every rando youtuber tells you to go with the same ES build.
But yes, they are nearly all quite OP. Though that's true for many classes at the top-end at least (albeit not for that many different builds each).
What turns me off of it is more the plethora of bugs associated with all of the warlock stuff.. Miasma Chain especially is one of the most excruciatingly broken/bugged skills ever and by extension one of the most annoying and aggravating builds to play.

OP
Top-end being powerful is not an issue, the issue is with Warlock it is achievable in a fraction of time and effort compared to other classesSchnorki wrote: 1 day agoBut yes, they are nearly all quite OP. Though that's true for many classes at the top-end at least (albeit not for that many different builds each).
For example: warlock's Echoing Strike pierces through all the monsters; bowazon needs lots of proper gear for Pierce, Faith etc and even then she doesn't have even a fraction of clearning speed
I started playing Werebear druid after playing warlock for some time. I made Metamorphosis, and I still need to make Fortitude and some other runewords. Warlock with zero gear is LOTS more powerful than that + warlock has magic damage without runewords. Werebear can't do almost anything about physical immunes
Magic-oriented warlock has fire + magic elements, it pretty much outclassed hammerdin.
Etc etc
Just feels extremely unfair/unrewarding

True, they do get there with a lot less gear.
I wish I could bring myself to play a shifter druid..could at least be less crap than other druid builds. But they just look so cringe. ^^
(Still the only class I simply don't enjoy playing in any build, sadly)

I could probably easily come up with more, but basically just those 3 make sense, generally skill tree of a warlock is much simpler than other classes (which is a negative for me).
Not nearly even as close to variety and different viable playstyles that even Barb allows (horker, Frenzy, Berserk, Whirlwind, howler etc etc)
Feels like getting 50-60% of options that other classes give more or less.
The problem is; previous classes were optimized for dealing with immunities more, so you were forced to make 2-3 characters each ladder just to be able farm everything. For example I had barb for trav, sorc for keys, paladin for Chaos etc etc. Now you can just make a warlock with no gear and you are done ; p Which is really disappointing.
Also everyone is playing just warlock bc of how OP it is, so trade is stale compared to other seasons, bc primarily just Warlock gear is really valuable. It was more evened out previously (bc of how many chars you needed), so another negative point for a community aspect of the game; another reason to spend LESS time in the game
When immunes were difficult to deal with I tried to convince my wife and friends to play D2, and get them to play different classes, so we can farm everything as a team xD Now its kind of pointless, there is no such motivation to bring friends into the game anymore. By making the game too simple they are really negatively affecting the trading and community aspects. Also replayabity aspect went down for me by a lot bc of that
I wish they were cranking up the difficulty instead, like introducing new difficulty above Hell where every monster has at least 3 immunities or something, so it would take the community months to figure out xD I liked the puzzle-aspect of the game and trying to make sense of random items and runewords to deal with the difficulty, finally figuring out those several builds that ACTUALLY work after some of trial and error, then trading for a relevant gear
Now it's just - you make a char; level up to 80 gg. Game done in a few hours xD
Just add me on bnet, and ping me if you like my offer
It sure was important for Blizz to make the new class rather OP than difficult - to catch both new players and power players right from the start and also make it appealing to casuals. A weak/difficult class would probably have led to an overall less positive reception.
Whether or not it was deviously planned to make sunders, which quite some other OP builds rely on, much harder to get, is a different question. I'm overall happy for this change as sunders were way too easy to get before.
But, in the end, I feel like both Warlock and sunder changes were overdone in their respective regard.
I wouldn't see it as fatalistic, though. With e.g. a classic Hammerdin or Bone necro you could also sail very smoothly through Hell at low levels due to the only few magic immunes and low gear requirements. Warlock leveling using miasma/ Abyss felt not that much different after all, imo. Endgame with ES however, no question, it is also for my taste too OP to provide consistent fun and challenge.

I prefer a summoner build for HC:louner wrote: 1 day agoBesides, it literally has just 3 builds to choose from: fire/eldritch/miasma.
Demonic Mastery: 15
Summon Goatman: 10
Blood Oath: 20
Death Mark: 20
Summon Defiler: 10
Bind Demon: 20
And 1 point in every Sigil.
I got Hephasto the Armorer with Fanaticism and Amplify Damage. For normal monsters I use two Defilers for bosses two Goatmans ( Death Mark gives 25% CB).
I use a Rogue Scout with a bow using Edge. Thorns are nice for cows and bosses, and the Defiler will add a little bit of damage.
But yes it is somehow boring. This build uses effectively just one skill: you just cast Death Mark on every enemy group. Hephasto will almost one-hit the whole screen. Mostly without being in the room where the fight happens. I just follow my demon to collect the stuff. You can use Hephasto as an enemy sensor: when a neighbor room contains monsters he stands still like a dog in ambush. When no enemies are near he walks around.
Normally when you play a summoner build you have the problem that some monsters focus you instead of the pets. Using two Defilers makes Hephasto magnetic. When he hits any enemy the damage goes to almost all enemies on the screen, and this resets the focus of the monsters. They will then attack him instead of you. Also hitting all enemies at the same time, triggers the hit-recovery for every single enemy. This calms down even very fast TZ guys.
I use Wizardspike for maximum resistence and Blood Oath gives me 70% damage reduction: 10% for myself and 60% goes to the daemon. I am now 91, and I think it is impossible to die. But we will see...

People are so Black & White about this stuff. It's nuanced. I made a quick chart based off the 'late game' tier list on maxroll.ggSten0ne wrote: 1 day agoop af and I love it!

Why does sorceress have 12 viable late-game builds of which zero are at tier D or F? Meanwhile necromancer only have 3 viable late-game builds? Bottom line I see the whole warlock balancing as required to keep the diversity of player options moving forward. It's fine to maintain an S tier (or two) Warlock builds while still toning down damage output. For reference the S tier barbarian builds are ' Gold find' & ' Berserk'. Yeah, not exactly the same damage output as Echoing Strike Warlock
JUST DONT PLAY WITH HIM, HAVE ANOTHER 7 CLASS, END OF DISCUSSION!
Honestly imagine thinking anything BALANCED when it comes to classes comes from Activision Blizzard. We have proven this now in Diablo 4 many times, it will be the same in Diablo 2 Resurrected.
Nobody pays for class which is underpowered / balanced. Unfortunately that is what Id rather pay for really.

2 things :
First put yourself in Blizzard shoes. The one that invented diablo is long gone. Everybody is gone. Not only did the company got gutted but when you look at ressurected, the idea is to bring back us, the old players from the 90's, to buy something. This is not a critic, I really, really like what they have made with ressurected. And when you look at the 2.6, they tried to resolve more problems. Now with the warlock, this is a never seen before situation : new content, and pretty solid, for a game "dead" for 15 years. They had to make it bigger than itself. How would you justify paying 25 [$ £ €] otherwise ?
That new class not only integrates well with the game mechanics, it brings new one. The miasma and fire spells look amazing. Chains and Abyss play with physics ! These are never seen before in the game. The whole concept of book and playing 2H is enticing. Of course it leads to a lot of problems, because 1.10 happened after the classes were done, so they were thought to fit them. This one had to be fit in, and they did not see the synergies would break the game. Or did they ? The patch coming is, to my knowledge, the biggest nerf that game saw before, so they acknowledged the problem and acted upon it without being too conservative because it's an old/new game. I like to think that the devs and blizzard are now thinking of ressurected as "their" game, not a tribute, and they can modify it however they see fir to correct problems. There is a limit to this due to the core mechanics (mainly threshold and frames), but at least they are trying to correct.
Second thing : the main star is the chest !!!! Are you kidding me ? We had to create MULES, this made no sense. We could not store anything, it was a matter of how much space you have, not your skill, not your time, but space. Inventory had been for a very long time a problem in this game, and they looked at path of Exile and thought "uh, maybe some things could be imported too ?". Of course the Warlock is OP, but it had to be either that or underpowered, I am sure they prefered to launched it and then correct it, but that goddamn chest gives me a hard on everytime i control click any gem or potion or rune. This is the amazing new feature that could be integrated, make our life a ton easier, and does not change any mechanic in the game. Love it !

OP
I've read 3.2 news. Much better now, lower damage, actual AR checks, no longer shield + weapon.
I expected them to keep making the game easier, but they actually make it more reasonable which is good.
Good news
That should unlock more builds, make runewords more useful; maybe it will make sense to trade rare and base grimoires now.
I don't care about ppl telling me to play other class, or "dads" that have no time to farm, or ppl who just repeat "have fun" like NPCs, or ppl simping for Blizzard, so I won't respond to those. Read again what I said, start thinking.
I want this game to be good and I want it to be good enough so I will want to keep taking few days of vacation at work each season to play it
But that requires some difficulty spike and trade/community aspect to work

Gosh, thank you, that's very kind! I am happy to be back, it's such an excellent community which massively enhances my enjoyment of the game. If I can give even a tiny bit back then I'm thrilled!
So even though I moved away from Wilfred the Warlock fairly quickly, I am definitely happy with the expansion for getting me hooked again, and that delicious QoL seasoning as well, of course.
