Artificially blown up prices at traderie.. Sorry to speak bold, but imo whoever pays this price has no idea about this game. Only chance to have
War Staff
and
Rune Staff
with 5 OS is when they drop from monsters lower than lvl 25, which excludes
Rune Staff
drops. Other option is that they got rerolled with
Recipe: Normal Quality Weapon of Same Type
, but then,
Archon Staff
may also get 5OS. So in the end, you can't be sure what they roll if purchased from unreliable sources that traders are.

Just do some Cows in Hell and wait for any of the three dropping, then
Larzuk
. Did the same with eth WS, cause it looks cool. I just threw away a plain
Archon Staff
while pondering about trying to give it 6os with
Recipe: Add Sockets to Normal Weapon
, but ended up deeming it not worthy wasting
Perfect Amethyst
and
Ral
Getting back in to D2 after a long time. If someone puts a regular
Archon Staff
for the quest adding sockets, will it give them max 6 sockets? I forget how that worked...

Yes, indeed.

If it is a looted regular or superior
Archon Staff
- yes. If it is a staff that was rerolled with a
Recipe: Normal Quality Weapon of Same Type
- no, 5

Just saw that recipe today. Me trying to figure this out in my head... I imagine using that recipe would be if you were aiming for some runeword that uses 5 runes instead of 6. Like if I had some weapon that I wanted Grief, etc?

I'll take one with 6 sockets if the price is reasonable. trade/archon-staff-t1675364.html

Sometime items can be of low quality (damaged, cracked ...). With that recipe you can up them to normal quality. As I understand - it makes archon quality level as the lowest for normal quality (of that item group, not the regular Archon level), and that allows for 5 max.

Yes, but first check here how many sockets the weapon gets with ilvl 1. Then you can
Larzuk
for the guaranteed maximum sockets for ilvl 1 or you add sockets with the cube with a relatively good chance of getting max sockets.
For example, if you find a cracked
Flail
and you want to make Heart of the Oak in (4 sockets). You use the
Recipe: Normal Quality Weapon of Same Type
and you get an ilvl 1
Flail
. But this can only get 3 sockets max. So, no HotO with this base.

Bear with me, trying to understand. When I hover over the
Flail
, it shows max sockets 5. Why would that only yield a max of 3? I thought someone said if you make something normal quality, it's like max -1.

That's not how it works.

Every socketable item in the game has a fixed max number of sockets based on the ilvl. There are 3 ilvl ranges for max socket determination:

1-25
26-40
41+

(the ilvl ranges are the same for all items, just the max socket number is different for different items per ilvl range)

The ilvl is determined at drop (which monster and/or area it dropped from/in). Fixing a low quality item to a normal quality sets ilvl to 1 regardless of what it was before.

If you look more closely at the
Flail
page you can see a section detailing the max sockets per ilvl range:
An ilvl 1
Flail
gets max 3 sockets.

So that being said, is there a way for someone on Switch to see what the ilvl is before I try to put sockets in and screw it up?

No, there's no way on Switch, and not on PC either for that matter.

Before RotW, the servers did send the ilvl to the game client in the background. It was never visible in game, but there were 3rd party mods that were able to find the ilvl:s and display it on item tooltips in-game. But apparently, in RotW they patched it so ilvl is never actually sent from server to client, so the game client has no way of knowing or detecting the ilvl. When socketing an item (or doing any action really), there's always a "handshake" with the server, and the server knows the ilvl.

You need to pay attention & remember where an item dropped. On normal it's not just which area but also exactly which mob type (it's important). On nightmare & hell it's only important to remember which area, but you do need to pay attention to if it was a champion, unique, or a minion, since these have a level bonus compared to normal trash mobs. It's mostly important when area levels are right around the boundaries between socket ilvl ranges, cause a minion level bonus can push the level into the next ilvl range. Etc.

If you traded for an item it's impossible to know what ilvl it was, you'll have to trust the seller.

I really appreciate the information, this is very helpful.

Dumb question, is there any kind of chart... thing that says "If it drops here, no this, it's this ilvl range"? So if I was wanting to farm for a (example)
War Pike
that I could get 6 sockets on, this is the most likely place?

First off; there's a socket calculator right here at diablo2.io: Tools > Larzuk Sockets
To use it you need to enter the area name and the mob type (name plus whether it's a normal mob, minion, unique or champion).

All areas & levels can also be found here at diablo2.io: areas

Here's another resouce as well:
https://diablodex.com/Guides/Areas

Please note:
  • The ilvl is the always the level of the monster that dropped it (if it's a chest or other "poppable" it's based on the area level).
  • On Normal difficulty, monster levels are not directly tied to area levels. Each monster type has a predetermined level regardless of which area it spawns in (some monsters may appear in multiple different areas with different area levels but they'll have the same level regardless). This is only for Normal difficulty. Yes, it's complicated, that's why the socket calculator helps in particular for Normal difficulty. Exception: if it's terrorized then monster levels adjust according to the
    Terror
    zone level.
  • On Nightmare and Hell, the levels of normal monsters are the same as the area level.
  • Unique monsters and their minions have a +3 level bonus.
  • Champions have a +2 level bonus, except for Berserkers who have +3.
  • When an area is terrorized (
    Terror
Zone), the area level and monster levels are directly based on your level (unless your level is lower than the area's usual level).
  • Anything that drops on Nightmare starting with
    Jail Level 1
and on is always in the highest ilvl range (41+).
  • I.e., it's only on Normal difficulty and the early parts of Nightmare where you need to really pay attention.
  • There's a socket calculator, did I mention that?

Nope. One big reason why we have diablo2.io :-)

You're pretty helpful, you should be a moder... nvm

I guess I probably should have browsed the site more. I found it when I googled for something and it just took me to the forums.
