started happening around version 2.5.
fucking sick of this, I'm killing baals minions, decide to turn down volume but the moment I hit options it crashes lol.
my pc is pretty new, no problems in any other game, except warcraft 3, go figure why lol.

I get this too, and I don't know what the problem is nor what the solution is (if there is one). It doesn't happen every time (for me) - sometimes when clicking "Options" in the Esc menu, the game just freezes and crashes after a few seconds. Not every time I open "Options", just sometimes. If I then restart the game it usually works fine to open "Options" in-game. The game isn't prone to crashing otherwise during normal gameplay, it's just when trying to open "Options" (and sometimes also when trying to exit/close the game from the main menu / char select screen).

A workaround, if you're just going to turn up/down volume, is to switch to legacy graphics before hitting Esc, then use the legacy options to change audio. You have much fewer settings in the legacy options menu, but volume is one of them.

I'm in CET (Central European Time), so that's UTC+1 normally and UTC+2 during DST.
My profile says Ladder, but I play both Ladder and Non-Ladder.
My profile says Softcore, but I play both Softcore and Hardcore.

I don't really use the options menu so I cannot comment on that, however I can confirm that the game sometimes freezes when i try to exit from the main menu (idk when did it started that, but its a fairly recent problem I think)

I typically only use it for turning on/off audio, I don't usually go in there to change anything else :P

Same here. The problem occurs when the game is running 2+ hours. When my PC is on over night, then D2R always crashes when I open the Options.

After a 20 year break from D2 I started playing D2R in 2024 with my sons (9 and 10 years old)
Time Zone: UTC/GMT +1/+2 (Germany)
Online workdays: casually from 07:00-09:00 pm
Online weekends: casually midday to evening
Non-Ladder | Softcore | Expansion

Exactly what I am doing there, too 😉

I am running D2R in Qemu running Windows 10 with PCI passthrough on Debian Linux. When I keep it running over night to pick an Anni, I switch off the Monitor. After that D2R looses the display resolution and in the morning I have to go to the options to toggle between window and full-screen mode. But I never noticed a crash.

OP
good to know it's not only me, and yeah not sure when but it's recent, it didn't happen at launch when I started playing, only now that I came back to the game lol.

My game has been crashing 95% of the time when I change zones using the waypoint. Usually this happens within 60 seconds of starting the game. Not a viable strategy playing hardcore!! I've opened the game about 15 times in the last two months, and all but once has it crashed after using the waypoint. The one time it didn't I got to go kill
Baal
and then the game crashed when I portaled back to town.

Life is hardcore, man.

Hmm... And I thought the reason for me is that I play the game on PC I assembled back in the end of 2009 with the exception of the video card and an SSD.

Just to chime in so folks don't think they're alone here. I frequently experience crashes when clicking 'Options' from the Game Menu. This 'bug' has been in existence since launch. I've complained about it on the official Blizzard forums and never received a blue response. It's extremely annoying so don't feel alone OP!

Had issues with loading the game or using waypoints/town portals. It was 50/50 if the game crashed or not.

After restarting my computer the issues seems to be gone.

Mine crashes when I hit exit game from the main menu. This may sound weird, as I am exiting the game anyways, but instead of closing it crashes for a minute then finally closes if I don't force close first.

Usually looking for Runes, Essences, PGems, Tokens, Keys, etc.
Always willing to discuss and negotiate :)

I solved the crash problem after unpacking the game files using Ladik's Casc Viewer. The game runs much faster with extracted files; launching it through a shortcut with the -direct -txt flag. However, after each update, the game needs to be unpacked again.

Good day to you partner!

Same. Suuuper annoying if you need to quickly switch servers for trades -_-

Even if you kill the app with task manager it will make you lose so much time!

I'm not super technical adept. Why are the files 'packed' in the first place? This requires the game to 'unpack' every time? Curious about this process.

Thanks @d2jsp I think my initial question is more around the original design choice to 'pack' the files. We know it comes at this cost of longer load times but does it save on storage or something?

I don't know what this approach to storing files in an archive is connected with; it was already in D2 LoD, as well as in other Blizzard games, for example WC3.

Good day to you partner!
