Description

Was curious what everyones preferred choice of town was. Mine would have to be the
Pandemonium Fortress
for it's efficiency, I feel like everything is so close and easy to access especially for reviving my merc (thanks
Tyrael
). My second choice would probably be the
Rogue Encampment
, its cozy!

Couldn't agree more with
Kurast Docks
as the worst, makes
Mephisto
runs annoying!

Agree on A3 beeing the worst, but for
Mephisto
runs you can just klick the portal. Doesn't cost much time and you spawn in A4 afterwards.

Would like A4 town the most if it would not have the annoying background "music". That's why it is A1 for me.

Just take the portal to A4 after killing him so you end up there in the next game.

Personally, I've always been a fan of act 1.

I didn't even think about that, I'm sure that will save me a lot of time! Thanks! @rixsen @Schnorki

Yep, I always put my Meph run last to end up back in A4. The other reason the
Pandemonium Fortress
is good is because it has the quickest load time.
7
Act 1 and 4 are just about equally cozy and efficient for me. Act 2 is ok, 3 is less ok. I actually like act 5 the least because of the load times and Cain not being near stash like he should be.

For me Vibes: Act III, Function: Act IV
7
A1 and A4 for the convenience.
A2 and A3 long walk to wp after spawn, also townportal in A2 is little far away from wp and cain. A3 and A5 have a nice atmosphere, but Cain is far away from chest in A5. Usually just buy scrolls at mara's while selling to her since most of the stuff i find is for her anyway.

My ranking, based on a combination of vibes and practicality (and weighing both equally) is as follows:
  1. The
    Pandemonium Fortress
    - Act IV is my favorite. It's the only "supernatural" setting and it feels adequately mysterious.
    Tyrael
    's presence is striking,
    Halbu
    and
    Jamella
always made me curious because we know nothing about them, and the stairs down to hell feel ominous and creepy, especially in contrast with the fortress itself. I just can't get enough of Act IV.
  2. Rogue's Encampment - I can see how this is probably everyone's favorite. Act I is fantastic, but I think the music and nostalgia (this probably being the place you spent the most time in as a beginner) takes this to great heights. And the NPC distribution is not bad.
  3. Lut Gholein
    - Taking a portal back to town feels better in this area than probably any other. Talk to Deckard, talk to
    Fara
, keep going. I remember the first time I got to Act II and how the contrast in coloring to Act I struck me. This is also the hub that feels the most like a city and I just love the vibe of the place.
  4. The
    Kurast Docks
    - Yes,
    Hratli
    and
    Alkor
are probably the worst business people in the world, putting their shops so ridiculously out of the way from everything. However, turn up the sound and walk around there for a while. Probably the most entrancing vibe of any area in the game.
  5. Harrogath
    - This might be the single hub you spend the most time in, over all. However, I never quite meshed with the ambience of the first few areas of Act V, town included. I greatly dislike the loop around the waypoint, Deckard, portal, and
    Malah
. Music is cool, but this loses me on both setting and organization.
You can probably switch the 3rd and 4th spots around on any given day, but that's about where I am.

GMT-3
I only play softcore, non-ladder.

In terms of vibes I would pick
Harrogath
. I like that it actually feels like a fortress. You manually open a gate when you start act 5 and you immediately see why there is the need for one as the battlefield unfolds in front of you.

What adds to the immersion is the fact that it is also the only town that experiences some sort of direct story impact as Nihlatak flees into his fortress and gets replaced by
Anya
and the portal to Nihlatak's realm.

Harrogath
with its snowy landscape and soft orchestral soundtrack also offers a great contrast to the grey, moody ashen hellscape of act 4.
7
Act 1 Rogue theme just hits, but Act 3 gets me all whoozy and Ayahuascan, which I love too, just as Act 2. Act 4 background music gives me stress, so I'd rather not stand AFK there.
Harrogath
is a vibe, and I love it there, particularly with the Barbarian Lore.

Favourite has got to be Act 1 for the nostalgia.

For me The
Rogue Encampment
just about wins, ahead of
Pandemonium Fortress
.
My least favorite is Act 2, despite being able to instantly take
Warriv
back to Act 1 from the load in location, which is nice when doing repeated runs,
Lut Gholein
is my least favorite town, the distance between tp and waypoint and the way scrolls/potions are separated on vendors is annoying, and the place is huge, good vibes though but that is true for all cities imo.

For act 2, you can quickly talk to
Warriv
when spawning in and travel to act 1 for speedier waypoint!

Harrogath
annoys me because I always run into a tree on the way to Nihilak portal. Otherwise not bad. Act 2 and 3 will forever be my least favorites because of lost transit time. Act 1 is my favorite for music and nostalgia, whole Act 4 is next in line for efficiency.
7
I love the
Rogue Encampment
for it's look, music and memories/nostalgia.
It has become the default image my brain reverts to when I come across words like "quest hub" or "town", even after so many years of experiencing other games with similar mechanics.
7
Call me crazy, but A3
Kurast Docks
feels the most seamless.

I tend to play characters without Infinity or
Warmth
, so mana refreshing is quite nice to start each run.
The services I almost never use are mercenary revival and repair, so no issue having those out of the way.

Act 3 feels best suited for this.
  • Dash from spawn to
    Ormus
for health/mana restore (you can click away before his dialogue box even pops up)
    Over to Cain for ID
Stash to dump the good stuff
    Then WP
Nice and linear.

In Act 1, the stash and
Akara
are in different directions from the spawn, and the camp has a few variants for WP location, so overall feel is rather zig-zaggy.
In Act 4, again the stash and
Jamella
are in different directions, and Cain tends to wander and you can't see him until stepping behind the arches, so he takes extra clicks to track down before backtracking to the stash.
