What it a blue item? Did it have a prefix of "jewelers Archon Plate of whatever"?
Runewords can only be made in grey items (non-magic/rare).

I'm willing to accept other forms of currency. Like Tokens, Keys, Perfect Gems, and certain minor runes in lieu of my asking price. I'm also willing to accept rune combinations that add up to my asking price.
The likely answer is it was a magic armor with "jeweler's" prefix which has 4 sockets, and those won't work with rune words.
@Whero Use this website next time when creating a runeword!
D2 is such an unforgiving game. I think we've all botched a runeword or two. The magic items are not clearly distinct enough from certain socketed White items with various attributes.
All I can say is, I've been there. We all have. And it sucks. You Larzuk an item thinking it'll get some sockets and it gets others. You put runes in a blue item and get garbage. Wrong order, wrong rune, slip of the mouse.
I think I'll start a thread on how to mess up in D2.

Imo the game isnt unforgiving, its not that hard to pay attention which runes youre placing or double check the right runeword youre making from all the hundreds of runeword providing websites
It is. One slip up and your massive time investment is gone. it is the very definition of unforgiving. Your take here isn't that you think the game isn't unforgiving, it's that you're happy with that. Which is fine, but it's not the same thing. You're basically agreeing with me... do your research, check the hundreds of websites, be careful, double check, make sure... because the game is unforgiving. Which is what I said.Semirotta wrote: 3 months agoImo the game isnt unforgiving, its not that hard to pay attention which runes youre placing or double check the right runeword youre making from all the hundreds of runeword providing websites![]()
Understanding the difference between this:

and this:

Is somewhat nuanced. Both have an array of blue magical attributes. One will accept runewords and one will not. Again, it is the very definition of unforgiving.
Sure, one slip and its a mistake through and through done. That is why you must pay attention and double check everything. This is something personally learned in very early days of playing diablo games. Hence imo its not very unforgiving if youre just paying attention.departure wrote: 3 months agoIt is. I play this game baked pretty much any time I play it yet manage to avoid mistakes xD
That is literally what unforgiving means.

My brain hurts now.
One has grey name, the other one has blue. Also, magic one has a prefix or a suffix (or both), shown both in its name and below, in the stat block. The difference is fundamental.departure wrote: 3 months agoUnderstanding the difference between this:

When you loot the item, its name (on the ground) is the very first thing you see. So it cannot be overlooked.
Remember the time before there was any way to respec your hero?
One click at the wrong skill and you were forced to delete your hero or deal with a non-optimized build.
This game has been unforgiving for a long time and it still is in some parts.
Just be careful and accept that humans make mistakes. In the end, we are talking about virtual stuff that can be replaced.

Yes it can. Especially to someone who hasn't been playing for very long. The difference between the blue text for attributes of the item and the blue text in the name is subtle. You don't make the runeword when you're picking it up. You make the runeword out of items in your stash.Trang Oul wrote: 3 months agoOne has grey name, the other one has blue. I can't overlook it now, after playing for over 20 years. You can't overlook it. But it most certainly is easy to overlook as you have to know exactly where to look and what to look for. The easiest way to learn to look for this is to screw it up, and I have, and many players have.
Another easy thing to overlook when making runewords is the type of item. Infinity can be made in spears now but not Insight. Some of that stuff gets quite tricky.
@DasNarf
I do remember that, and it was over the top unforgiving. I'm glad they changed that, but also glad they didn't go d3 and just leave it up to whims at any moment. Because I like that this game is unforgiving to a degree. That was a little too much for me though. Hardcore is also too unforgiving for me.
Edit:
Ok, I admit there is a little part of me that wishes that you had to build your character attributes and skills in a way that works all the way from beginning to end. But optimization is also fun.
