in Hell difficulty. The drop chances are insanely rare so the more mobs you can kill in a short time the better chances you have of finding one.

Find what Runewords you can make based on runes:
2. All Runewords in order by level requirement:
-*WARNING #1: You cannot create runewords in anything but White and Superior bases. Meaning Magic, Rare, Set and Unique items with sockets will NOT work.
-*WARNING #2: You cannot socket already socketed items. Also, when using the
Horadric Cube
it gives a 50% chance at the max sockets.
-*WARNING #3: Always double Check Runeword recipes to make sure you put the runes in the correct order and in the correct item type. (Many people accidentally put
Polearm-runewords inside
Spear
-class weapons for example.)

Important Tips:
-Choose bases with low strength and dexterity requirements.
-
Larzuk
quest will always give the maximum number of sockets for that items ilvl.
-You can easily buy a lot of the bases with open sockets from Vendors too. Reset all Vendor items by leaving town through the Main Entrance, Portal or Waypoint.
-Use Hel Rune + TP scroll in the Horadric Cube to Remove all items from sockets, the Runes or Gems will be destroyed in the process.

-Runeword Effects (D2io): runewords

5. Socketing Items in the
Horadric Cube
&
Larzuk
Quest:
*Important Notes:
-For creating sockets with the Cube, only use white bases. Superior, Magic, Rare, Set or Unique items do not work.
-You cannot socket already socketed items.
-When using the
Horadric Cube
it gives a percent chance for the max number of sockets (see below)
-Gloves,
Boots
, belts, rings, amulets, javelins and other throwing weapons cannot have or gain sockets.

The number of sockets
Larzuk
puts in your items depends on the rarity and item level.

-Unique, Set, and Rare items = 1 Socket
-Magic items = 1-2 Sockets (random)
-White/Grey items = Maximum amount of sockets based on item level (explanation on item ilvl and creating early Spirit Sword here)

Transmuting Sockets in The Horadric Cube:
WARNING: The chance to get sockets depends on the max that item can have. So if your armor type can have 4 max, then it has a 50% chance to get it.
Shields = 50% at 4 sockets. 67% chance at 3.
Armors = 50% at 4 sockets. 67% at 3.
Weapons = 50% at 4 sockets. 33% at 5. 17% chance at 6.
Helms = 83% at 2 and 67% at 3.

-Remove Socketed items:

+ TP scroll (runes/gems/jewels are destroyed)
6. Farming & Shopping for Socketed Bases
Notes:
-Must buy from vendors in Normal
-Reset Vendors via main town entrance, waypoint, portal or sewer in A2
-When an item is grey it means it can be Socketed, Superior and/or Ethereal

1.
Akara
(N) for 2os Staffs & Scepters (
Drognan
for 2os x2-3 Fire Ball staff for Leaf)
2.
Charsi

7. Valuable/Useful Bases to Look Out For
Notes on bases:
1. Elite bases can only be found in Hell and the best place to find 99% of them is the
Secret Cow Level
. (
Berserker Axe
- Pit, worldstone,
Mausoleum
or maggot lair)
2. A lot of runewords CAN use many bases, but are a complete waste if made in a sub-optimal base in most cases. So for 99% of runewords, they typically only have 1-2 possible bases they should ever be put in.
3. Bases are worth a lot more if they are superior and even more with max rolls

Shields = 50% at 4 sockets. 67% chance at 3.
Armors = 50% at 4 sockets. 67% at 3.
Weapons = 50% at 4 sockets. 33% at 5. 17% chance at 6.
Helms = 83% at 2 and 67% at 3.

6. Farming & Shopping for Socketed Bases
Notes:
-Must buy from vendors in Normal
-Reset Vendors via main town entrance, waypoint, portal or sewer in A2
-When an item is grey it means it can be Socketed, Superior and/or Ethereal

1.
Akara
(N) for 2os Staffs & Scepters (
Drognan
for 2os x2-3 Fire Ball staff for Leaf)
2.
Charsi

3.

4. Cow Level (N) for 4os Crystal/Broad swords, 4os Polearms & Bases that can be socket with 4 using the

5. Cow Level (NM) for 4-5os Exceptional Polearms and other Bases
6. Cow Level (H) for 4-5os Elite Polearms, 4os
Monarch
for Spirit Shield (or one to socket with
Larzuk
)

So last time I played D2 was 18 years ago. I was a bad then and only played with friends via LAN so we duped items all around.

So, I vaguely remember making one or two rune words when I was already in Hell and they were low level runewords. So my experience with them is very vague.

I purchased Diablo 2 Resurrected for PC and started an amazon (bowazon in mind). I'm just level 23.

I'm having a VERY HARD time getting White items to craft a runeword. I already got several runes. Enough to make the armor Stealth and missing 'ahm' for Edge.

Is it possible to farm White socket items with my first character being just lvl 23?

Yes sir, i included this under my new Important Tips section:

"-You can easily buy a lot of the bases with open sockets from Vendors too. Reset all Vendor items by leaving town through the Main Entrance, Portal or Waypoint."

Refer to #12 on my New Players Guide for each vendor and the items with sockets they sell.

As for harder to find bases like a 4 socketed polearms for insight or a 4 socketed sword for Spirit. Refer to this guide here: forums/tips-for-creating-a-spirit-sword ... t3267.html

No sir! ladder-only runewords have been unlocked for both Single Player AND Non-Ladder! hooray! As well as
Uber Diablo
and
Uber Tristram
!

Refer to my thread here for all 28 changes in D2: Resurrected: forums/27-official-changes-in-diablo-2- ... t8558.html

I've probably spent dozens of hours refreshing the vendors over the years lmao. They just sell such useful wares!

Does this same principal apply when trying to make mid-level rune words?

I did make a couple of low (lvl 13-21) runewords and they worked very good while I cleared Normal. However they began to show 'their age' when I hit NM.

I got several newer runes but now I can't even see any socket items from
Charsi
nor Farsa (nor from mobs). I'm assuming because I'm in NM, they won't sell White/grey items anymore? just blue (magical).

ya you can only buy the socketed grey items in Normal. NM and Hell vendors pretty much only sell magic items.
freedon wrote: 2 years ago

socketed items can still drop from any mob in NM & Hell. That's where you get the best bases for runewords.

UPDATE: [10/09/21]
-Added New Section: 5. Farming & Shopping for Socketed items

Then again I need to put more points on patience... Haven't seen a single White/gray item with 2 sockets or more drop from mobs.

Appreciate you adding #5!

ADD: so I'm assuming as well, grey items aren't quiet making it for runeword quality at NM. What I'm seeing is a unique weapon I got , it's min/max damage is way superior compared to a grey->runewords even if it has 200% ED.

Is my logic correct or am skipping something?

-When an item is grey it means it can be Socketed, Superior and/or Ethereal
-In Nightmare, exceptional bases can drop anywhere. So be sure to pick up the White and grey bases you're looking for to double check what they are.

Did that answer your question?

Oh yeah...defintive.

I'm a loot pick up whore . I stop whenever I see a grey or White, and now I tend to ignore rare items more than White/grey

-*WARNING #2: You cannot socket already socketed items. Also, when using the
Horadric Cube
it gives a 50% chance at the max sockets.
I don't think this is true. Everything I have read says the cube recipe for sockets rolls a d6, and if it rolls equal to or higher than the max sockets of that item, you get max sockets.

Example 1:
Bone Wand
has max of 2 sockets.
If you add sockets with cube recipe, there is a 1/6 chance (~17%) that is rolls a single socket, and a 5/6 chance (~83%) that it rolls 2 sockets.

Example 2:
Scythe
has a max of 5 sockets (when dropped in Hell).
If you add sockets with cube recipe, there is a 1/6 chance (~17%) that is rolls a single socket (and the same percentage chance for a 2, 3, or4 sockets), and a 2/6 chance (~33%) that it rolls 5 sockets.

The 50% chance is true for shields, armors and weapons with 4 max sockets, they are the most popular recipes used for socketing so thats why i originally put that. But you're right its not accurate so i edited it to be more specific. Thanks for pointing that out :D
