Question about Infinity runeword: Is -% light res important?

No data yet

Description

Hi, I was told by someone in game that the -45-55 enemy light res on Infinity is unimportant because it only applies to merc's attacks and not the player's.

Is that true? And if so, is it safe to say than only the %ED mod really matters?

Yes, minus enemy resistance only works for the character that has the effect. The highlight of Infinity is Conviction, but the CB and high %ED range are very much relevant for dealing with few unbreakable LI immunes and boss killing.

if you are asking because you want to fight immunes, my best bet was swapping to a weapon that has a chance to cast Amplify Damage, or deceprify, Lower Resist and such. was a game changer to me. Conviction is very far in HR, and also not as effective. not that i know, never had one.

goodluck, and may the RNG god be with you.

Amplify Damage and Decrepify lowers physical resistance, irrelevant for lightning builds. Lower Resist is capped at -70 res, whereas Infinity’s lvl 12 Conviction lowers them by 85.

And is Infinity effective against cold immunes? And especially is it good for cold sorc that already has Cold Mastery to -165%?

No. Infinity is fairly pointless for cold.
Mind you, cold is a bit special because:
- Cold Mastery does not break immunities (ever) whereas Conviction (=Infinity) theoretically can
- If you can break it, Cold Mastery easily drops all of the previous immunes to -100, meaning you do the same damage to them as you do to non-immunes (unlike lightning which still needs griffon's and facets and whatnot to stack -res to actually do some real dmg to them)
- Cold resistances on mobs are generally much, much higher than lightning, resulting in you being unable to break most cold immunes with Infinity because their res is just too high to break with just that (or at all). That's why Infinity is so bad for cold.

As for the OP:
Correct, the -res on the weapon itself only applies to the merc and hence doesn't do much. For trading value/usage value, ED is the only thing that really matters except for folks looking for perfect rolls who will pay a hefty bonus for the -light also being perfect. But that hardly matters for most.

Mostly not. Most monsters have so high cold resistance that Infinity’s Conviction cannot break them, and Cold Mastery works only after the immunity is broken.

If you plan to give an infi to your merc - you forge it in ethereal elite polearm, and hope for better ed% roll - bc -lres is almost irrelevant.
BUT: if you wield an infi yourself - you want normal (not elite), non- Eth polearm - and hope for better -lres, bc ed% is totally irrelevant for you.

I came very close to trying this.

But then I came to my senses and realized that it could possibly roll as low as -45% resistance, and Crescent Moon 1-hand weapon has -35% resistance
