Can be used to make Runewords:
A2Might or even Holy Freeze with Infinity + Gloom + Coven
Infinity to cut enemies defense +CB
Gloom to blind archers and other ranged mobs
Coven to put sigil to slow everything down and cut devfenses even further.
With all of the above you don't need to wait while merc will reach mobs. As he is normally way behind you.
Reapers is good if you are teleporting. If you are on foot my choice is Infinity.

on physical melee i have one with a1 merc with Harmony for the Vigor and Delirium Helm so manic pixie girl action. I typically will have a a5 merc with Lawbringer or Azurewrath, Cure, and Mania. sometimes i will use a Plague if i don't to use Cure.
act5 with double Last Wish. Let the greed flow through you.

When you dont need Mana at all, i like Act 2 Might with ethereal Shaftstop, Obedience in ethereal Thresher + Andariel's Visage. Huge damage and CB, Res, attackspeed and the 30 % physical damage reduction.
If you want a merc that doesn't die at any third Herald:
Rogue Scout geared with Wrath Matriarchal Bow, Wisdom, Chains of Honor. Swap for Mist and Delirium if there are no immunes.
Dual Last Wish A5 Barb is fun if you are able to deal with immunes.
Bash Barb with Dreadfang does work, too.
A2 Desert Might Merc with The Reaper's Toll, Fortitude and Cure is a classic. Nothing wrong with that guy.
