Description
After much finagling, I finally got D2 LOD to install and run on my (definitely not work) computer without a disc. The only problem is that I ended up with version 1.14 to get it to work.
I have wanted to replay the original classic D2 at release level install. I can get it installed and running on my PC, but I need to leave the disc in. Does anybody here know how to do an install to run the unpatched D2 without a disc. And also without using Bnet for the digital download. That only gave me headaches without progress when trying to get LOD to work.
Edit: I have the physical discs and Key.

Have you tried burning the contents of the D1 disc to an .ISO file and mounting that - so that your PC thinks the CD-ROM is present?

I did see that when I was trying to get LOD working. Forgot about it. Thanks, I'll check it out.Teebling wrote: 3 weeks agoHave you tried burning the contents of the D1 disc to an .ISO file and mounting that - so that your PC thinks the CD-ROM is present?

Can't you just get the 1.14c or d patch without doing it now? It'e been a few years since i launched legacy d2.. I think you can just download the patch now from blizzard or online..

You can download any patch version you want, but I'm trying to get original release AND get it to run without the disc in the drive. That was enabled in 1.14 as long as you copied a couple files from the disc to the hard drive, but I don't think it was available with the original release. I'm going to try Teebling's suggestion with the .ISO file.Necx666 wrote: 3 weeks agoCan't you just get the 1.14c or d patch without doing it now? It'e been a few years since i launched legacy d2.. Gotcha! You are correct, that didn't happen until 1.12ish or so I think.RackAnewShoe wrote: 2 weeks agoYou can download any patch version you want, but I'm trying to get original release AND get it to run without the disc in the drive. I did what you did before, I mounted my iso using windows as a drive. And played that way. I misread, I didn't see you wanted to play d2 in its OG state.. Not patched.. My mistake.
Back before windows allowed it think had to use daemon tools or something to add it to drive.. Lucky windows does it from any iso now.

I can't seem to get the ISO files to work. I "mount" it and it shows up in explorer like an actual CD and I can browse it, but when I try to open D2, nothing happens. It doesn't even give me the "insert disc" popup. Do you have any tips for getting this to work?Necx666 wrote: 2 weeks agoGotcha! Could be copy protection. I assume you don't want to hack it, do you?RackAnewShoe wrote: 19 hours agoI can't seem to get the ISO files to work. D2R is nothing but a highly complex paper doll dress up simulator.

That's a possibility, but I have heard of people getting it to work so I assume that they bypassed it somehow. There's an alternate method of copying the CD to a BIN/CUE file that I read was supposed to get around that, but I have not got it to work. Plus, while messing around with things so much I broke my 1.14 version so nothing works right now.vued wrote: 18 hours agoCould be copy protection. DaemonTools had an option to bypass the copy protection that is why it was working back in the days. In 2008 with the patch 1.12 you could play the game without CD.RackAnewShoe wrote: 12 hours agoThat's a possibility, but I have heard of people getting it to work so I assume that they bypassed it somehow. So if you still have trouble to install the game, then first uninstall it completely, then reinstall in full install mode and copy all the mpq files again, apply the patch (1.12 or later). This did work for me few years agoIf all required Diablo 2 '.MPQ' files are installed on the hard drive, the game will no longer require the CD to play. For users that originally performed a 'Full Installation' and wish to run without the CD, all '.MPQ' files should be copied from the Diablo 2 CDs to the Diablo 2 directory. Most users will only need to copy D2Music.mpq from the Diablo 2 Play CD and/or D2xMusic.mpq from the Lord of Destruction CD. Mac users will need to copy these music files and rename them to 'Diablo II Music' and 'Diablo II Expansion Music'respectively. Anyone who did not perform a 'Full Installation' will need to re-install from CD again to ultimately play without the CD. In this case, a 'Full Installation' is required, followed by file copy step noted above.
I don't have RotW expansion yet.

I assume OP wants to play pre-1.10 version, right? Otherwise, the changes after 1.10 are minimal (except for UT in 1.11 and a small balancing in 1.13), so it's not worth bothering, and just install the latest 1.14 patch.
Well, there is one other thing - high rune relative rarity was altered significantly in 1.13 compared to 1.10.Trang Oul wrote: 6 hours agothe changes after 1.10 are minimal (except for UT in 1.11 and a small balancing in 1.13)
The patch notes for 1.13 do mention it, but it's not very clear just how significant of a change it was - Zod became 16x more common than previously, Ber became 9x more common (just two examples).

Correct. I'm trying to install multiple versions so that I have each on my system.Trang Oul wrote: 6 hours agoI assume OP wants to play pre-1.10 version, right? D2 1.03 (Not the earliest, but that's the version on my disc)
D2:LOD 1.08
D2: LOD 1.14
I had 1.14 working without discs because that's a native support they added in 1.12 or 1.13. I have been trying to use the ISO files to get the others to work without discs.

As I wrote. If you want to use CD image, you have to use something like the Daemon tools, which could bypass the copy protection. Or get cracked exe version, which I don't recommend.RackAnewShoe wrote: 2 hours agoCorrect.
