We all have paid for servers. why would they close them ?
We paid for D2R once, but servers need constant upkeep (electricity, and at least some support). D2 is old and can run on a potato server, so the costs may be low, but still not zero.
So? We paid for the game, we can expect that it works as it is meant to work.
We didn't decide on setting up the servers required system.

Well, according to EULA, which none of us read, we agreed that Blizzard can terminate the servers at any time, for any reason, or for no reason.

I am by no means comfortable with that (and I wholeheartedly support Stop Killing Games); I'm just stating how it is.

Yeah - we paid for the game, and the game included an online component, so of course we expect it to work on release and for some time after. Blizzard has just never made any promise on how long it will work, and like Trang Oul said, they can shut it down at any time and there's nothing anyone can do about it. It's their game, their game servers, we just have a license to play it, nothing else. Companies do shut down game servers. Do I like that? Of course not. Do I approve of this practice? Hell no. All of that said, I seriously doubt they'll be shuttering D2R servers anytime soon. If that ever happens, it will be probably be years down the line, maybe even decades (old D2/LoD servers have been up for 25 years). But I don't know more than anyone else, of course.

I'm in CET (Central European Time), so that's UTC+1 normally and UTC+2 during DST.
My profile says Ladder, but I play both Ladder and Non-Ladder.
My profile says Softcore, but I play both Softcore and Hardcore.
My Holy Grail Tracker is for Offline Hardcore.

It is my assumption that they maintain it as long as they are wealthy as they are to hold the server. Making it negligible.
And also as a hoarding of marketing shtick.

As much as I hate to admit. I bought and played d3 d4. Many times. Played.

So that seems to be working. Statistically for me - and them. Don’t know about all the other guys in the community. And they are guys.

goodluck, and may the RNG god be with you.

Looking at Heroes of the Storm, which is more recent than D2 LoD, may help to understand than even if the game is in "maintenance only" mode, the servers aren't closed.

Hots only receive some balance updates from time to time and the game is officially "dead" (no more content update).

My timezone is CET/UTC+1.
