I'm on the crossroad where every D2R player reacg, sooner or later. Which Base I should use?
My dilemma is connected to the fact that I already have 4os Eth Thresher, but I hesitate if I should use it or is better to search for Giant Thresher. Is it the potential price of the Infinity after I craft it, will depends a lot on that, that's what I care mostly. I want to minimize the potential loose of value. Maybe I'll want to trade it in some moment in future, so I want to save maximum value in it. I know that depends mostly on the roll which I'll get it, but how much the base will influence?

Can be used to make Runewords:

I would not worry about a potential value difference between Thresher / Giant Thresher as you never know how long it would take to find the other one.
Any difference would only apply to absolute min/maxers anyway. Unless you get a perfect roll in a 15ED base I don't think there is going to be a significant difference, but please correct me if I am wrong here.
Just to throw in a third option, consider going for a normal Eth base as self wielding is a very viable option for lightning sorcs.

OP
If I make it on normal Eth base, isn't that make the Inifinity actually not so good for Merc? I know the Conviction aura will be still there, but from the perspective of damage, the Merc will be really limited, isn't it? If I make it on normal base, isn't that will make it only good fit for Nova Sorc? And one more questionSuperIllu wrote: 4 months agoI would not worry about a potential value difference between Thresher / Giant Thresher as you never know how long it would take to find the other one.

Value wise I'd make it in the self found Thresher. A 4os ethereal GT was around 2 Jah last time I checked. It will retain great value if the rolls are good.
Incase you were wondering which base is the best, Pavke did a great break down a while back. You'll notice Thresher isn't on there, but it is still one of the most popular and versatile bases for Infinity or Insight. His detailed post is here:

Get a perfect Eth 15 ED superior base for merc will max your play experience .
And CV requirement is too high. There are some base they forget to do experiment have good value - performance.
For value-wise, only choose perfect 15ED superior Eth- Thresher( if you are picker, 15ED 3 AR will maximum the value) . It is most popular and reasonable requirement and most expensive.
And if you build things in very good base, means, you cant direct sell to market if you fail roll it. You have to use Hel to remove fail roll. Other than the good base, there is no much difference for future value if you use Eth sup ED 0-12, or non Thresher Eth base. Their value will be go down in future.
===Group, rolling not perfect good looking Infinity==
Meaning, the group , people pick okay Eth base to roll perfect Infinity, this style, even if you roll all good, the value continue to go down slowly . Because more and more people build this style and sell not perfect Infinity back to market with original cost, or slightly lost than it cost.
For the use perspective, you have to measure it by your gear and target.
For self wield, vs Baal single player, bottom roll and top roll will not bigger than 1 cast Nova, in most case, no difference for bottom roll vs top. The same situation happen to Phoenix shield, it act like break point.
For merc, no difference top ED vs bottom ED in trav run.
in most case, even if you use all bottom facet and bottom resist Infinity in single player. performance is the same. Unless you wana to make resistance a little bit above breakpoint and socket something else in other position. That you will need high to perfect roll to cover the shortage.

Favor Perfect Amethyst over Perfect Skull...
These days, I don't need that much Perfect Skull, it is less encourage to pay in Perfect Skull but it will treat slightly better than Perfect Gems.

I remember I read that reddit, they forget some base, not obvious base and price is cheaper even for ED Eth one.

In my view any decent 4 os polearm will do, but it also depends on the build and how needed your merc is as a weaspon. For instance my Fury Javazon and Chain Lightning Sorc takes down everything so quickly that the merc would be fine with a 4 os stick, because he's basically an aura wielding tag along who occasionally gets a chance to take a poke at something.
All my self made Infinity/Pride are ethereal Stygian Pike (non-superior)
It is equivalent to Great Poleaxe (speed and damage) and is the the easiest to make Infinity/Pride, as only it and Colossus Voulge (which is slower and has a high str requirement) will gain 4 Sockets from Larzuk quest
.
And it seems to drops more frequently than other "end tier" Polearms/Spears (which may get 5+ Sockets)

What base for Infinity... Thats a tricky question, best base is Eth Giant Thresher, due to fastest attack speed and high dmg. But because they are good, they cost like Ber rune. But if u get good roll you might sell it for several bers so you can make two more infinities in same base.
Basicly any Eth polearm is good.
But as someone said: if u need merc to stay alive and do some kills, then with bad non- Eth base he cant do that.
Also if you clear fast with those OP builds - Nova sorc, Mosaic assa, your demands on merc is just to "wear" Infinity. Then you can use any base. If you look at streamer like MrLlammaSC he always has those expensive runewords in very bad bases, because it actually doesnt matter much.
This season I made Infinity in Mancatcher (its fast as Giant Thresher) and base costs only 2ist (I am currently selling one, probably not listed here). I even bought 15ias with fire res jewel which I put into andy so my merc can reach better attack frames and made Fortitude in base with 850def.
One of my friend who made Infinity this season in Eth Giant Thresher he got low dmg but perfect -55light res. So if it was in Eth Scythe those Nova sorc would give him their liver, or if it was in normal Mancatcher spearzons would pay him well too. But it was in Eth Giant Thresher and his dmg is actually worse than mine with Mancatcher.
For Infinity there are 3 good bases:
1) merc - Eth Giant Thresher - you dont need -light res, only high ED
2) Nova sorc - Scythe (preferably Eth, because koreans pay a lot for the look of Eth weapon) - you dont need ED just -55light res
3) spearzon - Mancatcher - you dont need ED much (but due to life leech and mana leech its prefered), but -55light res is a must have
Also keep in mind that those koreans are paying premium for perfect roll. I did made Enigma this ladder in random Mage Plate I found. It got perfect roll and I sold it for Jah Ber Ber. Then I bought almost perfect non superior Mage Plate and got 773 def on Enigma, its defense is only -1 compare to previous one but I wasnt able to sell it for same price even its basicly same armor.
So even if u roll perf ED and low -light res in weapon for 2) and 3) use it has no value and if u roll -55light res in Eth weapon it has no value also.
Btw if u not rushing anything and just enjoying game, then act5 merc with dual Plague (it procs lower res) can be good also, you wouldnt get this "OP feeling" but in terms of "realism" of the game you will get best gaming experience. - but to get really good plagues they can cost even more than Infinity
If you have all the gear, then I would recommend to buy really good base ( Eth Giant Thresher) unless u struggling without Infinity so you need it asap.
And if u dont have gear, then use any good base u find to just make it and focus ur runes towards your own gear.
In terms of farming I think that first you should get Enigma, then finish ur entire build and then Infinity and after that you should focus on good andy and Fortitude for merc.
Btw regarding merc, if u really rely on him to do some dmg, what worked best for me is vamp gaze + CoH. But that can easily goes into several bers as well.

Agree on good base part for non-ladder, recommend to get perfect base, at least 15 ED ETH .The Flash wrote: 4 months agoOne of my friend who made Infinity this season in Eth Giant Thresher he got low dmg but perfect -55light res. For single player use, do you feel any difference if you use -45 vs -55 resist as Nova sorc? I cant tell, is there anything you cant one shot kill that can only done by -55?( or unless, monster need 55 to break immunity that 45 doesnt work)
ladder and non-ladder market is different, non-ladder, everyone is get at least one Infinity, 1 engima, look for something better. Mage Plate, almost out of market now, even if you perfect everything, it still easily lost to some easy pick low requirement elite plate.
1) it depends which scenario you run, mostly case, Eth wont different than 1 hit.
Those ladder and non-ladder market difference just says one thing, if your base is not good, the value will drop from Jah Ber Ber to slightly lower than Jah Ber in the case of engima for 10 season time.
Also pay attention to Eth not Thresher base, Ghost Spear or something, sometimes those series will show up perfect base (15ED 3 AR 4 os) with reasonable price like 1-3 Jah. these series performance is as good as Eth Thresher 15ED, or 1 hit less for merc 1 min dpm.

I prefer Ethereal Mancatcher, it's what I use on most of my Infinity mercs. One of them has an Ethereal Thresher. I think at the end of the day, we are splitting hairs. I just like Mancatcher for the atk speed which helps the merc leech life faster.
Usually looking for Runes, Essences, PGems, Tokens, Keys, etc.

If you need the merc for killing stuff I would pick a fast base for a maximized chance to proc Crushing Blow and life leech.
Thresher, Giant Thresher or Mancatcher. All of those will do the job.
If you need him solely for the aura, anything but a Colossus Voulge is fine.

OP
Thanks everyone for the replies, you helped me A LOT!
At the end I decided to search for Eth Scythe. I'm damn curious to try the Nova Sorc and also after that I assume the aura will be the main thing I need and won't be completely useless, if I want to use it on Merc.
I hope I can get Eth Scythe for around 1 Ist on Ladder.

Be careful with the ethereal weapon. Change your left skill to throw, so you won't loose durability by mistake.

Ethereal Scythe Infinity can only be used on a Novasorc. If you don't like that build, you are screwed. A Scythe is too weak for a high level merc.
An elite base Infinity can be used on any elemental caster build for its merc.
honestly I dunno if -45% and -55% makes difference. But its 10% of your dmg, so I would say more, but if u make your own Infinity, what you get is what you will have. You can get griffon with jewel up to -25, then -55 from Infinity + Conviction so normal monsters will be at -90 anyway with sunder. But there are some big bosses with like 300res and against them that difference between -45 and -55 matters.leox wrote: 4 months agoAgree on good base part for non-ladder, recommend to get perfect base, at least 15 ED ETH .The Flash wrote: 4 months agoOne of my friend who made Infinity this season in Eth Giant Thresher he got low dmg but perfect -55light res.
