Are there any sort of staff or
Swirling Crystal
for sorcs that come with base increase to skills or stats that can then get a runeword to further increase it?

For example, is there the possibility of finding a 4 socket
Archon Staff
that has (x) to cold skills that I can then plug HOTO into? Is there any benefit to using a
Flail
outside of resale?@

Can be used to make Runewords:

Ah, greetings, traveler! In the world of Diablo 2: Resurrected, certain items indeed have inherent bonuses that can be further enhanced with runewords. Allow me to shed some light on your inquiries:

1. **Staves and Swirling Crystals:**
- Staves can spawn with +X to Sorceress skills and sometimes even specific skill bonuses. However, staves cannot have more than 4 sockets, and while they can roll with these useful modifiers, only specific runewords compatible with staves can be used (such as Leaf or Memory). The Heart of the Oak (HOTO) runeword requires a
Mace
or staff with 4 sockets, but it is commonly made in a
Flail
for better flexibility due to lower requirements and faster attack speeds.

2. **
Swirling Crystal
:**
- Orbs like the
Swirling Crystal
can naturally come with bonuses to Sorceress skills or attributes, but they cannot be socketed with multiple runes to create runewords. They do, however, serve as excellent standalone items due to their inherent properties and can be further enhanced with rare item affixes.

3. **Using a
Flail
:**
- A
Flail
is often used for creating the Heart of the Oak runeword due to its low requirements and fast attack speed, which also benefits characters other than Sorceresses who can wield it for its excellent bonuses. It’s a versatile weapon for caster classes because of all the powerful stats HOTO provides, including +3 to all skills, faster cast rate, and resistances.

To summarize, while you cannot create a hybrid staff with cold skills and HOTO, you can focus on utilizing other runewords or exceptional elite options for the desired combination of skills and bonuses. Choose wisely, and may your arcane powers be ever potent!

This is an AI-generated response. Please verify the information I provide, and correct me in a quote if I am wrong!

OK,
Swirling Crystal
is out, but would there be benefit to using a staff with intrinsic skill boosts and boosting further with HOTO?

You cannot make HOTO in anything other than a
Flail
,
Knout
, or
Scourge
. Period. You can make Call To Arms in a 5os
War Staff
and its variants. Obsession in a 6os
War Staff
and its variants. Memory in a 4os staff and Leaf in a 2os Staff are also options.

I've been wrong this whole time. They can be made in staves. Flails are just the only one-handed weapon they can be made in. 🫠

I'm willing to accept other forms of currency. Like Tokens, Keys,
Perfect Gems
, and certain minor runes in lieu of my asking price. I'm also willing to accept rune combinations that add up to my asking price.

That's what I thought, but according to this page base/archon-staff-t1758.html HOTO can be placed in an
Archon Staff
?

That is an oversight on the page. You cannot make HOTO in an
Archon Staff
base. Even items that say they are '
Mace
' class. Don't be tempted.
Flail

Knout
, or
Scourge
. That's it.

I'm wrong. Learn something new every day :)

I think you can make HOTO in a staff, I found many topics about it (although I never tried but maxroll allows staves as a base). If you have a good base with good mods on you can try it but you lose the offhand shield as staves are two hand weapons.

The most used combination is HOTO and Spirit shield. But if you find an insane base you can go with staves.

The Runeword page on this site also clearly includes "staves" for HOTO.

Dunno if u can but not sure why anyone would want to when it precludes your Spirit shield. Plus after hearing about someone (forget who lol) putting it in a Warhammer or something different than a
Flail
just for style points and ending up with a Gemmed weapon and a bitten desk as a result, I'd rather just stick with what works than try to reinvent the wheel here.

Not all
Mace
-class weapons will work for a HOTO. A
Flail
has low strength and Dex requirements which makes it ideal, but is there anything cooler than a
Flail
swinging sorceress? It's way overpowered considering its cost (KoVexPulThul). and it's really the best all around sorc weapon :d

It's a tradeoff basically between Heart of the Oak in a
Flail
+ Spirit shield and Obsession in a Staff, whatever suits you more. However to make anything in a Staff being worthwhile you'll need to first find a decent (if not GG) base and HotO base is just 4os
Flail
(since only Flails can support that runeword from all other maces).

It's not solely +skills you should be after with a Sorc, it's also @res, mana, FCR and stuff like that -- that are really making a difference! :)

P.S. It's the analogy of: Why would you ever want to equip only 1 weapon on Barb when you can have 2 and have all the additional bonuses other one brings or in some very rare cases +shield. :)

Ma neeeeeeema veeeeeeeze! xd

Someone much smarter than me already said once: "The real value of something doesn't reflect in a number of how much a seller can ask for it, but on how much a buyer is willing to pay."

Battle Hammer

Mace

Battle Hammer
is a hammer, not a mace 😉

Blizzard really did us a disservice 25 years ago by making it so confusing. There’s a whole category of weapons called “maces” (in-game they all say “mace class” on the hover tooltip, and they all benefit from Barbarian’s
Mace Mastery
), all different kinds of blunt weapons. In reality there are 3 weapon classes - clubs, maces and hammers. The fact that the whole category of blunt weapons is called “maces” yet there’s a sub-group of blunt weapons also called “maces” is just needlessly confusing. The weapon category should have been called “blunt weapons” probably.

The page on “maces” on the old
Arreat Summit
website groups these blunt weapons by proper class, but it’s definitely a bit discrete:

I wonder if this issue exists in other languages as well 🤔

Sadly, yes:

True maces: "Maces": ("klasa buław" - "buława"/"булава" = "mace")

I suppose the translators just blindly translated the provided texts, without digging deeper whether they make sense (and introduced own issues with the translation as well...).

I didn't know that the "mace issue" with Heart of the Oak was actually a translation mistake 😮🤔
(I thought it was just a bug/glitch...)

It isn't. The original English version incorrectly calls most blunt weapons "maces" (except wands and staves - but they, together with orbs, are incorrectly called "staves"). Translations just repeat these mistakes, as many of the item types do not even have a proper description string to be used.
Look here and search for Class - (with a dash).
