Nope. It has to be a physical hit with a weapon
also it leeches x% of the physical(!) weapon damage you deal to the monster.

Only weapon hits dealing physical damage (as noted above; final damage, after resistance and damage reductions), multiplied by drain effetiveness, multiplied by difficulty level penalty.
