I went with Wyrmhide on the first one for my hammerdin. It looked decent on all of my characters, and has a fairly low str req.
My 2nd Enigma I created in an Ancient Armor for my Barb, probably wasn't the best idea, but that's what I wanted....and I know that I will never try to sell it.

Not really, cause most builds that use Enigma tend to stay away from being hit. Cause most melee builds would use a CoH, Stone,, Fortitude or something similar.
Only thing with the enigmas is the look, like a Dusk Shroud one looks like crap imo on a necro. But say an Archon Plate looks like a heavy armor like your Ancient Armor and looks way better on necro than the light variants.

Mage Plate allows for it to be used with 0 or almost 0 points in str in endgame plus and this is a big plus for me allows any alt char to equip it really soon and it makes leveling them a breeze.
The low str requeriments are more important than the extra def in this case i think.
All my characters that use this Enigma have 0 points added in Strength. Feel so good.

Ancient/Ornate/Sacred is actually "medium" armor.
I know that Archon technically has better stats, but Ancient is by far the best looking armor for the Barbarian.
Mage Plate is by far the most versatile option and most resellable. The defense from the base is almost completely irrelevant, same with the %ed from superior. 3os MP is the best option imo.
I also went with Mage Plate in superior form. 0 stats in strength means more in health

I'll go for Mage Plate too, once I do my first Enigma, all upcoming will be for the looks (If It will ever happen to have multiple ones). You will barely notice the lack of vitality or penalty to movement speed anyway.
