The Sanctuary was built by the powerful mage, Horazon. He kept demons as slaves and thus feared that the Great Evils would exact revenge for his actions. Thusly he created

The Arcane Sanctuary to protect himself as he believed that it would not only protect him from Hell's

Vengeance, but also allow him to continue his studies, free from the ravages of time and disease.

Later the mage, Jazreth, also known as the Sorcerer (Diablo I), sought to find this mystical Sanctuary. He eventually found it beneath the Palace of

Lut Gholein and entered. In doing so opened a Rift from which the demons, locked in the Sanctuary since the Death of Horazon, poured forth and proceeded to slaughter both guards and the harem women.

Many players tried finding a Pattern for a tell regarding which one of the four directions the summonner spawned. Yet up to current day no one found any Pattern. Currently it is believed that the direction is completely random.

Tal Rasha.
