Can be used to make Runewords:
If Um is worth 1/3 Ist and Mal is worth 1/2 Ist, cubing Um runes would seem to lose value as 2/3 Ist is more than 1/2 Ist. So, what are you all doing when you have excess Um runes? Cubing, Trading? If trading, what are you trading them for?

Trade them. For instance, normally 6 Pul can be also traded for Ist, which is better than cubing them up to Ist. Thus, you may get Ist for 3 Um
I think your read is correct: cubing Pul or Um loses market value, but it's not always clear what you can trade them for. You can buy crafting pieces or pgems and such for Pul/ Um. Otherwise, you can cube them to save time (even if it loses market value) or you can add them to trade bids: if someone bids Gul, instead of bidding 2 Ist, you can bid Gul+ Pul/ Um
4096 Pul runes is a Zod rune, so i would probably stop cubing after Pul with some exceptions like 2 Sur for a Ber because Ber is so useful.
