In the last month I've seen most of the hr drops in cow levels: Ber - cow run on p3
2 Sur - different cow runs on p7 (managed to pick one up, wasn't fast enough on the second even though I was close enough) Gul - cow run + bonus a 24ar Mara at Countess in the same game Vex - cow run Jah - random minion in the tower cellar, after everybody left a cow run game.
Been very lucky to get max rune drop from hellforge in almost every campaign (except 1, I think, which was Um)
I prefer Chaos Sanctuary, I think, for my rune runs. I'm starting to warm on the Pit, though, Ist yesterday and again today over maybe 10-15 runs.

I prefer CS because it's still fun for me, and a lot of stuff can drop. Also, that Zod was the first I ever saw (I only solo). My wife thought someone legit died I freaked out so hard.

My first big drop in game came in the form of a Sur rune early on. I should have kept it but, i was basically in rares on my lvl 80 sorc at the time. First character on d2r. That Sur dropped from pindle. Before realizing pindle seemed like a waste, he dropped it and i traded that for Tal Rasha's Guardianship and a p topazed Harlequin Crest. Shortly after that trade a Tal Rasha's Guardianship dropped from diablo ..... so i traded that to get a Tal ammy and a Gul rune. This was early on mind you. those items were worth a ton. Then during an Ancient Tunnels run a week later another Tal Rasha's Guardianship drops. traded that for Vex maybe, as its value changed dramatically in a month. Ohm dropped from Mephisto one day. Turned that into 1/3/6 Call To Arms !
Fast forward to when I built my Hellfire Torch farming basic smiter. I got a Zod rune from a sarcophagus in the Matron's Den. After farming all the torches I could handle a month or so later i created a horking barbarian and was farming Travincal. A Lo rune dropped. I made a Grief and it rolled 40 ias 380ish attack if i remember. I traded that for a Ber + . More Travincals later I was able to trade runes for Jah , another Lo and created a lowish Grief to replace the one I lost and make a nearly perfect Enigma in Mage Plate. I have found a few other mentionable things but nothing like those items.
D2r has been pretty good to me. Some of you may have told me why didnt i keep that Grief , but at the time i was after Enigma and it was worth quite a bit! I was able to get an unid Annihilus for a Stone of jordan i found off countess( yes countess!) midway on as well that rolled max exp( the only reason i care for it) and at this point in time i just farm randomly, hoping for a Griffon's Eye more runes, or something cool I havent seen. D2r is a cruel mistress some days, but it really brings back the old memories of when i was a young adult trying to figure out what i wanted to do with my life.

Maybe not most useful but noticeable find when I was in Crypt. I was playing my Frenzy barb and going to leave area when saw the last Zombie. Usually I ignore such single mobs but not that time. I have hit him and got a Gul rune.
The most useful rune was probably a Sur that dropped off Baal on a public Baal-Run that everone had exited before (except me and another guy). Until then I was sure, I'd *never* manage get an Enigma together, as I just don't have time to farm forever, but this drop changed everything. It enabled me to get my hands on a Jah when I traded it together with a Lo I got from a lucky 40ar hoto-roll. Eventually a SoJ dropped not much later, which got me to the fitting Ber (when I added some other lonely lower runes I found along the way).
But my *highest* rune drop was actually a Cham which dropped while I was finishing my round of farming by going for Shenk. It dropped from one of his many weaklings. Since nobody needs a Cham (this sentence will not age pretty well considering the upcoming 2.4 update), despite it being the second rares rune to drop, it was a bit useless. So the Sur was much nicer
