Description

Grief is infamously known as the best melee runeword in the game. It's often said it's so good that it's broken.

The reason, however, may not be clear as the stats are rather deceiving. This runeword doesn't have any % Enhanced Damage, which means the weapon damage will appear unchanged from the weapon base in the item's tooltip and the character screen.

Still, Grief has huge added flat damage (+340-400 damage). Furthermore, this bonus is added to the weapon's damage when applying any enhanced damage modifier from any other piece of gear, like 30-60% ED from
Steelrend
or +350% ED to Demons from
Laying of Hands
.

Also, other stats like 30-40% Increased Attack Speed, Ignore Target's Defense, 20% Deadly Strike are very desirable modifiers in any melee weapon and elevates the runeword's DPS even higher (and all the rest are noteworthy stats).

Grief's added flat bonus will be used when calculating
Smite
damage.

Grief only takes a single High Rune (
Lo
) to make; it likely has the best cost-benefit of all melee runewords.

The -25% Target Defense property is useful because Ignore Target's Defense doesn't work with Act Bosses.

Rune order matters. Here you can see the bonuses from the runes only:

A slvl 15
Venom: Skill
proc has the following effects:
Poison Damage Min: 305
Poison Damage Max: 325
Poison Duration (seconds): 0.4
Duration (seconds): 176

A
Phase Blade
Grief, whose massive Damage +X attribute will rapidly outstrip all but the highest Enhanced Damage +X% weapon modifiers, is undisputedly BiS for most weapon-related builds. It is more succinct to list the builds for which Grief is not BiS:

Blade Fury
Assassins, who enjoy a sizable Damage +X bonus from the skill itself, are better served by weapons offering off-weapon damage bonuses, such as Beast's
Fanaticism
aura or Last Wish's Might aura.

Vengeance
Paladins would prefer nearly any other weapon, as Damage +X is added after the bonus elemental damage of the
Vengeance
skill.

Fire Claws
Druids use their weapon as a vector for the skill's sizable flat fire damage. meaning other options - such as Phoenix or Hustle - may offer more than Grief's admittedly high increased IAS and Ignore Target Defense.

Auradin builds using Dragon or Doom will necessarily prefer those weapons.

A Dream Sorceresses or Enchantresses will generally prefer faster or more flexible vectors for their damage, such as
Griswold's Redemption
, Passion, or
Warshrike
.

Melee characters for whom attack speed is inconsequential, such as
Charge
Paladins or
Leap Attack
Barbarians, will typically prefer an etherial Death, as its damage output will exceed Grief's.

A little addendum to the previous comment

- Melee characters that use 2-hand weapons (like Fury Druid), will normally deal more damage with an ethereal 2-hand weapon with a high % ed than with Grief (common choices are Breath of the Dying, Death and upped ethereal
Ribcracker
)

- About Auradin, the Dragon one uses Hand of Justice as weapon.
7
The odd of getting a perfect Damage and IAS roll is 1/671 or 0.15%.

The odds of getting a true perfect roll are 1/24156 or 0.004%.
