Would it work the same way if I were to equip my Merc with it?
Yes, the proc works on merc, too. But as it was told already, is hard to put him on the fire. You better let him fight some mobs but for better results you can remove his weapon (and Helm if you want) to not kill them to easy and have time to receive some hits.

But even he have Fade activated he still dies quite often. I quit getting him faded and start the fight with his usual gear.
Do you think using a cursed Lister as my bound demon would beat him with me and my Conviction merc on the periphery? From what I can tell, he's pretty susceptible to Smite

Warlock is pretty good at keeping your merc alive. I prefer Hephasto the Armorer over Lister the Tormentor because of his speed and charging appetite.
A good way to keep your merc alive for longer is to make the enemy to engage your demon instead of the merc. You can do this in two ways.

First, you can Teleport your demon on top of the enemy using Death Mark or second, if you have Enigma, you Teleport yourself along with you army a little further away from the enemy. Heph is always quicker than my merc and he engage the boss first and Emilio is coming afterwards to help him and stays away from the bosses blows. If he starts to take damage I retreat a little allowing Heph to Charge again first.

If you rely on your merc's Conviction you have to keep him alive as much as possible. If you get a demon with Conviction (Lister or Heph for tankiness) you can beat Ubers even without your merc but depends of you gear, if you can do enough damage to counter theirs life regen. After you put your demon in direct fight with the boss you can find a relative safe spot and apply damage to him. My fire warlock can do Ubers before Fade expires.

Great info. Thanks. I actually have a bound cursed Heph with Conviction now so I'd probably try a Pandemonium Event soon before the 3.2.0 nerfs the crap our of me and my demon

Before you go take a look at this map and learn how to take the fight. Try to lure Meph first and put him down away from his brothers, otherwise you're cooked.

What's your gear and inventory (skillers, Anni, charms, etc)?
I prefer Enigma for quick teleporting away from danger over other armors. If you rely only on running you can be easily surrounded and killed by bosses minions.

I have yet to get a Jah to build an Enigma so I'm running Chains of Honor with level 11 Blade Warp on switch.
I'm lvl92 Magic Warlock with
Weapon: Heart of the Oak in a Flail
Armor: Chains of Honor in an Archon Plate
Shield: Spirit in a Monarch
Helmet: Harlequin Crest
Abyss Level: 34
Bind Demon Level: 23
Life Level with Consume: 3134
Anni: 19/19/10

Merc has...
Armor: Chains of Honor
Helmet: Harlequin Crest
Weapon: Insight in a Bec-De-Corbin

Bound Demon: Hephasto, cursed with Conviction

I have a Zod to rig out one of my +2 Abyss/+2 Bind Demon Kris into a Void but I'm lacking a few more Ber runes and a Jah for the other gear I would need to guarantee I'm make it out of there

I know a lot of people use Enigma's to jump walls and avoid direct conflict but I find the Matron's Den one of the most fun runs in the game, and I've had high run drops including a Jah doing it. I've done hundreds of Ubers and I've used an Enigma for maybe a dozen or so of them, and then quit. Killing Uber Duriel takes only seconds, Izual in the Furnace of Pain maybe a minute, Lilith in the Matron's Den 1 to 4 minutes, and Uber Tristram no more than 2 to 4 minutes. So you don't need an Enigma to get started, but you do need to be able to kill everything and survive and that's the Key to success.

so, distribution of keys is equal, and it's not true that sorc keys drop less often?

Yes, distribution is equal, though there will always be a lot of variance over a small number of samples (and yes, anything less than several hundred runs is a small sample).

For example, a couple of seasons ago I did probably 150ish torch runs altogether. I didn't track the exact numbers but Paladin was my most common find. Sorceress was about expected, a few more than average. Through the first 50, however, Sorceress was by far the most common one. Through the first 20 runs or so, I didn't get a single Barbarian but I got 5 or 6 Sorceress. Smaller samples typically have higher variance in outcome. It evened out a bit (not completely) towards the end of those ~150 runs. And yes, I'd consider 150 a small sample.
