Can be used to make Runewords:

I just finished clearing terrorized act 1 (western WSS) + 2tz that were up before and after me clearing act1.
Not a single Herald could be bothered to spawn. Is it bugged or was this just bad rng? Any1 had this before? Was the first WSS I spent so far.

First things first: you were playing in Hell, right? 😅

Well, I guess it was just bad RNG really... I usually get 3 Heralds by terrorizing Act 1 and playing through "most" of it. The important thing is killing elite/champion monsters.

You didn't get ANY in-game message notification about Heralds? That's quite strange actually.

Anyway, the inner workings of the Herald's spawn-mechanism (exact conditions for its occurrence) are still unknown. Whether is more on the luck side or just a # of mobs you have to kill or whatever.

It seems to me, though, that after your first Herald the subsequent ones are a bit quicker. When I got my 6th and 7th last night, they spawned back to back almost immediately (don't know if it was pure chance or what).

....
Hmmm, you are really making me question myself here... Could not have been nightmare, because in nightmare I do not have Catacombs L2 WP and while playing through TZ act1 I just got this WP.
Technically could have been a normal game though, as I still do not have the WP on normal difficulty. But if it was normal, I should have noticed, right? Riiiight?

I can't tell for sure tbh.

But yeah, did not see a single message regarding drawing the heralds ire on me and so on...

Edit: Must have been a hell game, since my lvl 90 javazon gained at least 1-2 bars of xp. And I'm pretty sure I killed like almost 100% of the elites, also in the more unpopular places like Den of Evil and so on.

That's pretty strange behavior (based solely on my experience from yesterday). 😅

You said you had *just* finished clearing Terrorized Act 1 in your previous message, right? I'll tell you this: for the last two hours I've been playing TZs too and got not a single notification about Heralds either... (I play Single Player, btw). Perhaps Blizzard disabled something in the last few hours? An unusual assumption, but hey, what do I know? 'Cause 8 hours it was ago it was working just fine... We'll have to wait and see.

(and I am playing Hell!) 😁

But TZ Andariel gave me a Tarlic statue, so that's working fine.

EDIT: btw you mentioned The Den of Evil. Yes, I'm clearing almost everything too. In the Den only Corpsefire matters, or course, but I had a Herald spawn in the Blood Moor yesterday, and actually it's possibly a nice area to manipulate the spawning of higher-tier Heralds, because of the lower monster density (but Quill Rats hurt! You'll wish to get a Fallen or Zombies as Heralds...).

While doing TZ Act 1 I mostly skip Burial Grounds, Mausoleum and Crypt, The Hole and Barracks. Pretty much everything else I run killing elites/champions.

OK, so I have this one thing figured out: the 5 tiers of Herald monsters.

1st. Herald of Fright
2nd. Herald of Dread
3rd. Herald of Fear
4th. Herald of Horror (screenshot below)
5th. Herald of Terror

(I forgot to screenshot the Herald of Fear, but pretty sure that's the name)

EDIT: another confirmation -- you CAN spawn more than 5 Heralds in the same game. I just spawned my 6th, and he's again a Herald of Terror.

EDIT#2: just spawned the 7th, also a Herald of Terror. I probably won't be able to kill this one. /// Yep, died twice and can't recover the body. That's it for today, lost two bars of XP 😟
I just finished a full clear of the game in TZ mode with my singer barb (online, not SP).
All 5 acts activated with the worldstone shards.
Focused on clearing every elite/champion pack in all areas.
Ignored trash mobs as much as possible.
Spawned about 11 or 12 heralds in total.
Just as you said, they go up through the ranks until the Herald of Terror, and then you only get Terrors after that.
So approx 6 or 7 terrors in total.
Also, I horked their corpses with 72% hork.
Only one or two didn't pop.
Unfortunately, no latents dropped.
But I'm pretty sure this is the way to go about it.
Latents just have a very low drop rate.

Edit: Wanted to add I'm running with 255 mf

That's awesome feedback, thank you.

Would you say that the Heralds spawned quicker/easier after the 5th one? Or didn't seem to be any different than the first three or four?

They don't spawn faster after the first Terror. Each one is independent.
There's RNG involved in how long it takes despite how consistently you kill elites.
My guess is that there's some kind of "dice roll" that takes place with each elite kill. The resulting numbers are added up and once they cross a threshold, you get the first " Herald swiped right on you" message.
Not sure what exactly causes the Herald to spawn after that. That seems to be independent of elite kills. But just carrying on with the killing as before will spawn them reliably.
Sometimes it happens when I just change zones.
Interestingly, multiple heralds can spawn in the same zone, too.
I had two of them spawn in River of Flame back to back, i.e., without killing any monsters in between.
Conversely, when I got to A5, I had to work my way all the way up to worldstone keep before my first a5 Herald spawned.

Just done some more digging in the game files, and found out that higher tiers of Herald actually drop additional items, and indeed, only tier 4 ( Herald of Terror) and up can drop the Latent Sunder Charms

Edit: Looked at the game files again, I guess that heraldtier > 3 just means that there's a modifier to the drop when it the Herald tier is higher than 3 - that could be drop chance, type that can drop etc. I don't know yet. Have edited the DB to reflect what I think is the most likely scenario - that Tier 4 Herald simply has a higher chance of dropping a sunder charm, and that all Herald can drop a Sunder Charm.
Name Tier Drops
Herald of Fright 0 Normal drops
Herald of Dread 1 Normal drops
Herald of Fear 2 Normal drops + 1 extra item
Herald of Horror 3 Normal drops + 1 extra item
Herald of Terror 4 Normal drops + 2 extra items

I did a full 3 act run with my Java (96) this evening.

Took me 4 hours to kill everything in act 1-3, including all dungeons, optional areas and caves.

The outcome was downright embarassing:

7 Heralds, none of them dropped anything valuable. Blue and yellow trash only. Two of them spawned in act 1, four in act 2 and only one in the whole act 3.
I can confirm the highest ones drop 4 items.

Notable drops: Death Cleaver, Rune Master.

Highest rune: Lum.

Yeah... chances to get one of those new sunders are insignificant and in the daily random TZs you need abnormal luck to get 5 Heralds at once....

For low items I also accept: Perfect Amys, Ral, Hel, Tokens, Keys. Please don't offer runes lower than Pul (with the named exceptions).

Just saw a video on Reddit of a Latent Bone Break dropping from a Herald of Fright. Not sure if I'm allowed to link it here, so I won't, but let me know if you want to see it.

Thanks. I've updated stuff to show that any Herald can drop a sunder. Still think there's something going on with heraldtier > 3 though - not sure what yet.

Well I came to the conclusion, Herald spawns are simply so scarce sometimes, it seems like a bug or blizzard having turned off some stuff for bug fixing :D
Yesterday I ran 3 Terror zones for 1 1/2h hour and only on the last run I got the message about drawing a heralds ire.

Then again I ran all tz acts (except for act 2, because I still have not found the shard) and they gave me about 17 heralds in total. Today I got 7 heralds when running eldritch and shank tz + act 1 tz and sewers.
So I take it sometimes is just bad rng.

One more thing I noticed: When heralds spawn they always spawn next to me and an elite. So I guess, and it is a total guess, what triggers them spawn once you got one of them being angry at you, is simply being next to an elite. If you are close enough, probably within range to get xp, a function is called, which determines if the heralds spawns for the id of this elite or not.

Ok... lol from what I can tell these Heralds apparently dislike me more than all of you. I get them in bursts. I will have 2 or 3 in a row, i even had one spawn while i was looking for the first one. It appears to be all random on when they decide to show up.

I really can not recognize a system yet here.
My experience so far (always TZ 96, 220mf):
  • Clear a whole Act - several "ire" messages, but not a single Herald
  • Kill 1 Mob in a regular TZ leads directly to "ire" message, then without killing anything else, a Herald spawns
  • Switching Area immediately spawns a Herald (after an ire-Message of cause) - i had this now several times, seems to be a thing...
edit: no sunder found yet

I've been there. I received the messages several times that a Herald is tracking me, and then a Herald is hunting me and then nothing. Now I'm neither a tracker nor a hunter, but it occurred to me that tracking and hunting might not be a Herald's thing. So the next time I received the message a Herald is hunting me I took it slow, and discovered that I'd been killing them too fast to ID them.

I posted an explanation of how it works in the following post: post4116812.html#p4116812

The tl;dr is:
  • Every time you kill an elite there's a 2% chance to draw "ire". This is called a "token" internally by the game. You can stack up to 5 "ire" at the same time, but you won't see the number anywhere, you need to keep track of it yourself.
  • Every time a regular monster is spawned by the game and you have at least one "ire" (or "token", rather), there's a 1% chance that the monster is changed to a Herald. If it happens, the number of "tokens" is reduced by 1.
  • When you see the message that a Herald is hunting you, that means a Herald is somewhere on the map. It's already spawned somewhere, you just need to find it. It will be somewhere in a ~2 screen radius from where you were when the message was logged. If you're not finding any it means you're killing them without realizing it's a Herald, or just not looking around enough.

The reason is because of how a Herald spawns. It basically injects itself into the normal monster spawn process. Monsters spawn in a ~2 screen radius around you. When you enter a new map, a lot of mobs are spawned instantly as you enter (but just in that ~2 screen radius, not all on the whole map - the rest will spawn as you explore). So when you enter a new map when you already have an "Ire", there's a high chance of immediately triggering a Herald upon entry, the chance is bigger the more monsters are close to the entrance. Each regular monster that is spawned as you enter/explore maps has a 1% chance to be replaced by a Herald (if you have an unused "ire"/"token").

The tier 1 heralds are not much different from a normal unique monster, barely stronger or tankier. You can spot them by the little purple symbol on their heads. And they usually (always?) come with an aura that isn't available on normal unique mobs ( Concentration, Thorns or Vigor). Besides the aura I can totally see how a tier 1 Herald can go unnoticed if you're not paying attention to the game chat or audio cues (there are very distinct sounds when ire is drawn and when a Herald is spawned).

The tier 5 ones are no joke though... insane amounts of HP, insane amounts of damage. Depends a bit on the type of mob it is. A Fallen is harmless, just takes much longer than you're used to to kill. But ranged mobs in particular can be quite nasty on the higher tiers. I've been almost one-tapped by multishot tier 5 heralds, through level 40 Energy Shield with level 45 Battle Orders and max resistances.

I had a t5 Herald last night that was a Death lord. Not so bad until he got frenzied. Then. Holy. Fucking. Shit.
