cubemain.txt you can see that the recipes require a jew (i.e. any jewel). Compare that to other ingredients of, say, a Safety Body, which requires a brs,mag,upg (i.e. a magic breastplate or its upgrades - a specific base item) or a Caster Weapon, which requires a rod,mag (i.e. a magic rod - an item type).
