Personalization Quest Woes
Now, I know I'm one of the sentimental few who actually uses the personalisation quest, but...
When I started up in d2r, a very, VERY kind soul gave me a free Stone of Jordan to help me get started as I was scrounging about freebie lobbies to gear up a sorceress to farm with in my first week. A couple weeks later, my partner got wildly lucky and found a Bul-Kathos' Wedding Band on his necromancer. Of course, my main is an Amazon who would benefit much more from that than a SoJ, so as we're gearing up for Ubers I jokingly said I'd put my name on it before we swapped as I was quite attached to my SoJ (seeing as it was the first one I'd ever possessed in all my years) and I would want it back when we were done.
Come to find, you can't personalise rings or amulets! Won't even let me put it in the box. I swear I personalised a Raven Frost way back in the day, but... perhaps I'm thinking of the Raven Claw bow? Perhaps I ran into the same issue back then when I tried to personalise my Raven Frost to match and just forgot about it..? Either way, what started as a joke now has me questioning my Memory, and also just genuinely a little miffed that we can't both personalise our prize rings before we swap them. Seems to me jewellery would be one of the things most people would WANT to put their names on, if your partner plays with you that would make for a really cute way to propose or marry your characters, so what gives? You can personalise Wirt's Leg, but not a ring?! Why???
Anyway, it had me wondering if anyone else had run into that issue. For those of you who DON'T just cringe in fear at the thought of lost trade-in value and DO like to leave your mark on items of exceptional sentimental value, is there anything you would have personalised if you could?

I kinda feel like IF someone cares about branding their character's stuff, they'd need more than 3 chances to do so to cover it. And since you can't do that without re-making the entire character (online at least), it inevitably ends up half-baked at best.
Luckily, I never cared about any of that and prefer my stuff to be "nameless" (and will never accept a personalized piece in a trade for that matter). So the only things getting personalized is "whatever random item was last found on the way to handing in the quest" which are then immediately sold to her right after to get rid of them.
But yeah, far as I remember, there have always been restrictions as to what you can or cannot personalize with her.
Personally, I'd love to see that quest reward replaced or at least expanded with (an alternative option of) the ability to instead change the color or appearance of an item.
Luckily, I never cared about any of that and prefer my stuff to be "nameless" (and will never accept a personalized piece in a trade for that matter). misc is an umbrella term for rings, amulets and jewels - and, well, some other items too but nothing that's relevant when talking about rare item names)So the only personalizable item named "Shadow Heart" would be a sorceress orb, I guess.

Then you throw it on her pile of gamble garbage and snatch up a bit of Gold without even looking at her.
Personally, I like naming stuff that already has a name. Just makes me laugh. The only items I have ever named with the intention of keeping and using were a Wormskull for my OG necro when I was 12 (just a unique that looked cool) and the only Windforce I've ever found, which happened to be perfect, so I also had Larzuk punch a hole in it. Still used by my bowazon.

I guess I'm just never sure which items won't be replaced. I have a perfect offline griffons eye that might be a good candidate for personalization. I have some charms that are absolutely bonkers good that I wouldn't mind personalizing. But for the most part I'm concerned that I'll swap my gear out later and it won't stay personalized.
Now that it's not stupid-o'clock, I'm here to make some more intelligent responses (and some silly ones). Also, the more I think on it, the more I'm pretty sure I remember being exactly this mad about not being able to personalise my Raven Frost as a kid and the "well that's dumb, I'll just have to pretend I did then I GUESS" Memory eroded the truth over time. Alas...

There's two rings and an amulet... three items you can personalise... All the more reason it should be doable on your jewellery! Make matching your jewels for a maximally aesthetically pleasing inventory easier!
Was it a waste? Probably. But it was satisfying, and fun, and felt real special. It's a quest reward that genuinely means something to me. She's always been one of my favourite NPCs. Actually getting to go RESCUE people for a change in Act V instead of being too late to do anything but get revenge has always been my favourite part. I know it's just a game, but it still hits different there no matter how many times I play it.
I always feel bad having to turn around and sell her gifted rare item back when it's not better than what I have, though... please guys, give me more intangible rewards, I don't need a terrible ring or Spear, or the crushing guilt over selling it! I always drop those in free loot lobbies... if some newbie or desperate gambler wants to pawn it for Gold, better them than me, at least this way I won't have to know the deed's been done.

First off, SAME! Changing the colour of an item (let my javazons be decked out in M'avina silver too!) and/or changing its appearance as sort of a limited glamour system would be an awesome improvement to this quest reward. Wouldn't it be cool if you could make your special runewords or crafted items look as unique as a handmade item should? Make the personalisation something others can see outside the trade window. Plus, there's three times per character you can do it... maybe give it a little special set bonus if you actually WEAR all three with the same name? Speaking of jewels... does putting rare or unique jewels in a plain socketed item name it for the first jewel placed? It should. It should also name the jewels placed in an item like it names each rune even if it doesn't spell out a runeword. Would this get ridiculously long? Yes. Do I care? No. Give me the list! I totally get it. I would absolutely have personalised the first Annihilus I carefully persistence-hunted the Diablo Clone all across the Stony Field for, or a perfect Hellfire Torch, etc. But I'm just not a perfectionist when it comes to my gear's stats, so this doesn't bother me much: I simply would not trade out a personalised item for a superior quality one, period. I'd sooner trade a perfect item to someone who cares or make a new character to use it. Aesthetics, on the other hand... And finally... thank you!!! I know we've all played the game a thousand times, but I just don't get wanting a quest completion checkmark more than the special reward. When I was first playing and naming my Raven Claw as a kid, it was a bow that literally ended up taking up stash space on my original single player character. And it was SO much space. But it carried me ALL through the worst parts of my first-ever character's run, so of course 13-year-old me who didn't want to clean my room didn't want to get rid of the very first unique item I ever found either, so... it got the tag of honour. The "I was here." I once tried to fool the game by making a character named Fool to personalize a Maul and get a Fool's Maul for that sweet AR boost. Alas, I was the fool since I got a "Fool's" Maul but not a "Fool's Maul"

I quite like the quest reward, honestly. My only issue is that, as the Windforce (which was found somewhat recently) has proven, I will only use it on items that I feel I will keep basically forever. The end result of which is that out of however many characters have completed the quest, only two have claimed it (in one difficulty level). So, all those other Anyas will probably be waiting a long time to put their skills to use.
I like the idea of good items circulating in the game's economy that have somebody's name on it, though. I wish everyone would personalize their perfect, high-end items, trade them, and have them go through multiple players wondering who the hell "baal_breaker" was.

I usually do at least one item per character, either a piece of hand-me-down starter gear that will go on to the next new character or a self-found item I’m particularly fond of. I’ve done a mercenary’s weapon in the past before, too. There’s not much role to play here I’ll admit, but it’s hard for me not to roleplay at least a little bit. Maybe it wouldn’t de-value the items so much if so many people didn’t name their characters things like “baal_breaker” though… I’m hardly going to go busting anyone’s baals over Lore-accurate naming conventions, but I do wonder sometimes what on earth people were thinking when they named their characters…
Still, it’s a hard agree from me in spite of that. I wish more people would use it on their best finds. I’ll never be one to quibble over receiving a personalised item in trade. The added history, knowing that this was someone else’s prized possession before and not just something they looked all $_$ at and immediately sold off, is just so neat to me. I’d probably even pay more for it if it was a nice normal name, too.
While I tend to use names that are either decent-sounding or only secretly funny, I love stupid gaming names. The contrast of having something like "frostitute" next to The Oculus is exactly the kind of thing that makes the world better, IMO.
ALSO, the idea that someone who named their character "baal_breaker" actually cared enough about a non-power reward to engrave that on their Breath of the Dying is beautiful. Who was this man?

Maybe it wouldn’t de-value the items so much if so many people didn’t name their characters things like “baal_breaker” though… I’m hardly going to go busting anyone’s baals over Lore-accurate naming conventions, but I do wonder sometimes what on earth people were thinking when they named their characters…
