Description

Has anyone encountered this:

Difficulty: Normal
Class: Paladin
Level: 31
Online character
RoTW
Non-ladder

I got to the Summit at level 30, but very close to 31. It was definately 30, becasue I unlocked Fanatacism not long before. So I decided to TP to town and go to the 1st waypoint in Act 5 go get the remaining exp to get to level 31 before the fight. Got it, went back to town. TP back to the Summit. Defeated the Acients and... nothing. The last "Spirit" took a bit longer, but they all end up as statues again. No dialogue and no EXP. Same freshly hit level 31. White bar is not even visible. The gate opened, quest marked as complete. Exited the game and got back in. Quest still compleated, but no EXP. Is this a bug?@

As far as i remember from the original game the optimal level to complete the ancients quests was level 20 (Normal diff.), level 40 (Nightmare diff.) and level 60 (Hell diff.) If you complete the ancients quest at level 20 you will get to level 23.
I'm pretty sure most of the game's base code has not changed dramatically. And yes, I encountered it many times, especially on legacy D2LOD back in 2001 to 2010.

I also searched it and found this to confirm what i remember.

Code: Select all

https://gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/355691/ancients-dont-give-a-full-level
This information from my link is what i remember as important:
Reward: Bonus to your Experience. Normal: 1.4 million, Clvl 20 required. Nightmare: 20 million, Clvl 40 required. Hell: 40 million, Clvl 60 required.

AFAIK its 36, 66, 74

EDIT: the 20/40/60 is the minimum level required to receive quest credit and is not the minimum level to get max experience

I see. It still seems like you get zero experience from the quest if you are too far from the level range.

No, there isn’t a point where you receive 0 XP from ancients from being too high level - some people who are aiming for level 99 during ladder seasons save their ancient quests (at least nightmare and hell) until they’re 98. I know several people who have done this in D2R.

You can save the ancients quest this way:
  • if you are grushed all the way to hell completion, meaning you’re level 1 and don’t meet the level requirement of ancients anyway, you will not get ancients quests completion even if you’re present at arrest summit
  • during the initial ladder start playthough, assuming you’re playing in a party, leave the game with the character that wants to save the ancient quest while the remaining players kill the ancients, then rejoin the game before
    Baal
is killed (you just need to be in-game, in town, to get credit for
    Baal
    )
Not having ancients completed means you’re locked out of joining public
Baal
runs (you can’t enter worldstone keep), so you’re reliant on other types of runs for XP - TZs are generally sufficient for fast leveling, especially at high player counts.

If you save ancients on nightmare and hell until level 98, the XP you get from the quests is about 1/5 of the way to 99 (60/291).

I’ve no idea what happened to the OP but I feel that it must have been a bug.

I'm in CET (Central European Time)
My profile says Ladder, but I play both Ladder and Non-Ladder.
My profile says Softcore, but I play both Softcore and Hardcore.
My Holy Grail Tracker is for Offline Hardcore.

If what OP describes is true, it sure sounds like a bug. But I have not heard of or experiences anything like that before (at least for the current version of D2R).

Getting a bit sidetracked now regarding the optimal level for doing ancients.
For Norm you do tomb runs till 24 then do ancients to hit lvl 25 and then you can do
Baal
runs all the way to Hell/
Terror
Zones, right? Or is there a new, better way for leveling fast?

Playing HC SSF right now.

Hell completed: Sorc, Druid, Paladin, Ama, Assa, Necro
Nightmare completed: Barb

Iron Man (Paladin): Nightmare A1
