You are probably not hitting with the weapon since Obsession is not meant for that. Eth weapons only lose durability if you strike with them. Eth armor items lose durability if you get hit. That's always the case, not just with the Warlock.
From what I've seen in my own playtime, Echoing Strike does not reduce weapon durability. Thus, if you do not intend to use any other weapon-related skills, the ethereal property of the weapon would never become an issue. As mikelessar stated, if you are a pure caster who never swings their weapon (such as a Warlock specializing in the Chaos tree), you also do not need to worry about weapon durability.
