Description

I found a rare
Great Sword
or a
Claymore
, can’t remember which base, while running normal difficulty that has +1 Eldritch skills.
I knew that daggers got the warlock specific + skills but was unaware of other weapon types.
I haven’t found any swords with + warlock skills since.
I was wondering if it is common, obviously its possible, but I really like the sword and don’t want to go back to daggers.

Can be used to make Runewords:

That's cause your sword had a prefix which grants a bonus to an entire Skill Tree (Eldritch), vs staffmods (+ to invididual skills) on daggers. I.e. it was a magic sword with a prefix. A magic
Dagger
could have had that too, but any base/magic/rare
Dagger
can have + to individual warlock skills, even base daggers.

To quote Trang Oul from another thread:

If I interpret data files correctly:

suffixes:
  • of Miasma Bolt (charges) - polearms, daggers, voodoo heads; swords
  • of Lethargy (charges) - polearms, daggers, voodoo heads; rings, circlets
  • of Rancor (charges) - polearms, daggers, voodoo heads; shields (only non-class or grimoires, excluding auric shields?)
  • of Apocalypse (charges) - staves, daggers, voodoo heads; gloves
prefixes:
  • Chaotic/Erratic/Torrid (+ 1/2/3 to Chaos) - daggers (also throwing knives), grimoires, amulets, circlets; +3 only on magic items
  • Sullied/Tainted/Forbidden (+ 1/2/3 to Eldritch) - daggers (excluding throwing knives), grimoires, amulets, circlets, swords; +3 only on magic items
  • Fiendish/Dreadful/Malevolent (+1/2/3 to Demon) - daggers (also throwing knives), grimoires, amulets, circlets; +3 only on magic items
  • Chaotic/Sullied/Fiendish (+1 to Chaos/Eldritch/Demon) - grand charms (read: skillers)
  • Devil's/Arch-Devil's (+1/2 to Warlock Skills) - amulets, circlets; daggers, grimoires; +2 only on magic items
So your swords were "Sullied/
Tainted
/Forbidden ...", which grants +1/2/3 to Eldritch skills. It can appear on swords (as well as circlets, daggers, grimoires, and amulets).

Yeah, it has the new "Sullied" prefix, which grants +1 to Eldritch Skills (whole skill tree). A bonus to a whole skill tree is something that magic & rare items have always been able to roll, there's just some new prefixes/suffixes in the game now -
like,
- magic & rare amulets have always been able to have +X to any skill tree,
- magic & rare circlets have always been able to have +X to any skill tree,
- magic & rare weapons have always been able to have +X to Barbarian Combat Skills,
- magic & rare maces have always been able to roll +X to Paladin Combat Skills,
- magic & rare gloves have always been able to roll +X to Martial Arts and to all Amazon skill trees,
etc.

They chose to allow +X to Eldritch Skills (whole skill tree) on magic & rare swords (and daggers), but only daggers can have +X to individual skills. When an item has +X to individual skills, it's called an "automod", cause it exists on the base item, it's not granted by a prefix or suffix, even a white/grey item can have automods. What's new in Reign of the Warlock is that daggers can now have Warlock skills automods (even a white
Dagger
can have +skills). But you'll never see a white sword with +X to Eldritch skills cause that's only possible via the "Sullied" prefix, which can only appear on magic & rare items.

A magic item (blue) can have 1 prefix and 1 suffix. It's named exactly by the prefix & suffix - like, "Sullied Great Sword of Maiming", it has the "Sullied" prefix and "of Maiming" suffix, as example. Rare items (yellow) can have up to 3 prefixes and 3 suffixes, but the name is completely random, the name has nothing to do with which prefixes and suffixes are rolled, it's just a random name consisting of two words.

OP
Thanks for the detailed explanation. It was just chance that I found the sword. I have moved on to a polearm now but the information you provided is very much appreciated.
