I played D1 a lot, too but it is not nearly as complex and deep as D2.
After a 20 year break from D2 I started playing D2R in 2024 with my sons (9 and 10 years old)

I never felt like D1 was that great. It was the early steps to something great, but imo d2 was still better.
At least d1 isnt ruined by botters
