El Runes can only be farmed and not be cubed.
They provide some worth, even in the later ladder. Keeping a few of them is not a bad idea.
It takes an average of 10 Normal Countess Runs to find an El Rune.

You should keep those and some chipped gems, especialy early in the game. Also collect Low Quality Preserved Head and reroll them using Recipe: Normal Quality Armor of Same Type. Your goal is to roll a +3 Skeletal Mastery and +3 Summon Skeleton head. It will always get 2 sockets at Larzuk and, socketed with Splendor, is close to BiS for Summonermancer. Doing this with Unraveller Head is also an option, if you also want +3 Skeletal Mage on it, but chances to get unwanted skills are higher.
Another reason to keep El is to reroll Low Quality Archon Plate with Recipe: Normal Quality Armor of Same Type.
Afterwards, you try to get 3 sockets on it using Recipe: Add Sockets to Normal Body Armor. You get an enhanced chance to roll them, as the maximum number of sockets is capped at 3, because the armor's iLvl is set to 1 by the first recipe. Such armor with a reasonable def (480+) may sell for Ist+, especialy later in the ladder season when everyone has the resources to build Enigma.
