Description
Nihlathak is a summoner with a vast mob of minions that he uses as his weapons. He has no melee strikes at all, and only a chilling Arctic Blast spell for direct damage. The real danger comes from his use of the Corpse Explosion skill, which he uses to detonate the corpses of fallen monsters which deal substantial fire and physical damage.
Skills that destroy corpses are helpful to employ around him, such as some of the Druid's Vines, or the Paladin's Redemption. Items that grant "Slain Monsters Rest in Peace" such as the Nature's Peace unique Ring, are also useful.
People kill Nihlathak repeatedly in Hell mode to collect Keys of Destruction. Additionally, he gives one of the highest amounts of experience, leading to many would-be 99'ers adding him into their rotation of along with Diablo and Baal.

The path to Nihlathak in the Halls of Vaught can be determined based on which wall the eye texture is on.
Check the wall marks: If the "*" marks are the same as the "+" ones (which are always the same), that's the correct branch.
Damage Reduced By (DR) will greatly reduce the damage dealt by Nihlathak's Tomb Viper's.

A popular ring for farming Nihlathak is the Nature's Peace. With this ring, Nihlathak can't resurrect his minions.
Nihlathak's Secret
Nihlathak's location can be determined as soon as you walk through the door; no need to check the four walls for the eye markings. This is a micro optimization that could help shave off a couple seconds for Nihl runners with some practice. The torch. There's a torch to the left and the Ground around it could be cluttered or clean.
Clean Ground = lower paths
Messy Ground = upper paths
I remember this as "clean torch, clean run" because I have better luck fighting him when he's in a lower chamber.
2. New eyes. Immediately to the right of the door there is a wall that might have eyes on it. From what I can tell, these were not there in classic D2. Follow these new eyes to have a chat with Nihl.
**New eyes = SE**
**No new eyes + clean torch = SW**
"Follow the new eyes"
3. Bone snapper. If the torch is cluttered, things are going to get messy. This one is hard to see, especially if there is any glare on your screen. There's a wall around the corner to the right that has two versions. The normal version has three prominent, mostly intact skeletons. The other version has scattered bones embedded in the wall.
**Scattered bones = NW**
**Whole skeletons + messy torch = NE**
"Run away from bone snapper"

Nihlathak is one of the three monsters that can drop a Grand Charm with enough item level to roll a +41-45 life Affix.
The other two are Diablo and Baal.
In end-game these charms are usually re-rolled with the Recipe: Random Magic Item of Same Type recipe in order to hunt a +1 to Skill Tree with 41+ to Life.

Keep in mind that Nature's Peace RIP ability DOES NOT WORK WITH Holy Fire BUILDS.
Exploded monsters do leave their corpses, unfortunately.
Of course, if you hit them with melee skill like Zeal, Nature will proc and you will se "leaving soul" animation.
But those monsters killed at distance with Holy Fire count just like your Mercenary killed them - they leave their body on the Ground and Nihlathak CAN explode them.
