Guardian Angel (over 2k def) he has 90 allres with that setup, that helped A LOT. he can solo tranvincal with me in 8 player games.
I figured if hes killed usually its by large mob groups with might or fana aura, or ranged magical mobs. And the magic mobs problem completely went away with getting the res to 90

vamp gaze has no res on it, the +res come from Obedience and a 14% all res jewel in the

Guardian Angel, forgot to mention that
he is lvl 90 meanwhile, with lvl 80 you might need a perf Obedience roll, not sure about the base resis on lvl 80

Treachery in a 700 d armor

He rarely dies. Only things that can kill him are the Ubers and

Lord De Seis' pack. He can basically kill the cows solo and tanks council/hydras. He's like a canary for me, if he dies then I get extra cautious.

I like using

Eth Insight for my casters. (I hate using mana pots). I have

Eth Infinity on my lightning sorc. In my opinion

Eth Fortitude is the ultimate merc armor if you can afford it. Treachery is pretty good if you can find an

Eth 3 socket armor with over 800 defense. And I typically go with andarials visage with a

Ral rune to compensate for the fire resistance. A 15 ias / fire resistance jewel is ideal though.

Crown of Thieves with 12% Life Steal + Treachery armor

With the above helmet/armor, just about any polearm will keep him alive.

As a blizzsorc, i only used this setup to stall the

Travincal guys and he only accidentally dies maybe 1/20 runs due to

Conviction aura (which i probably should have skipped)

And CTA helps with Merc survival, w/e the setup you decide on.

I got the same setup and it works like a charm. Also trying

Eth Obedience + tals

Mask +

Guardian Angel (still 90 all res) to get the last council guy down faster.

Crown of Thieves for the life steal (some res/life too).

Duriel Shell for the resist, and cannot be frozen (very useful so the lifesteal is uninterrupted! Easy to lose a frozen merc who doesn't leech enough).
Insight in elite (non ethereal) weapons.

Needs a bit of managing, but they barely ever die.
I even make them kill

Nihlathak when he's immune to my stuff, and they do ok (once in a while I have to use a rejuv on them, but not often).
