are these on separate servers? I cant afford the new D2 but, i have the old one on my account from 20 years ago. Will i be able to play with my homies that own the new one?

Yeah, they are separate servers.

But If it helps, when you do get D2R for PC, you are able to transfer offline characters from D2 to D2R.

No, D2 and D2R cannot play together.
