What are some unique items that are commonly 'upped'?

No data yet

Description

Hey guys,

Would be interested in knowing which unique items are commonly 'upped' using recipes like and etc.

For example are there any exceptional uniques that are still used in Hell difficulty that warrant the expense of upgrading the base item?

PS been working hard on patch 0.3 for the whole of last week and very excited to deploy!

Adding to the other items mentioned, I like upgrading:
... and many others that I'm probably forgetting.

I think all of the items I usually upgrade are already posted here, so I'll offer an addition of info instead. :D

Upgrading armor can actually lower defense due to the way Enhanced Defense% works. Any armor that spawns with ED% (i.e. not ED% from a
Pul
rune or runeword bonus) whether it be superior, magic, rare, set, or unique will always spawn with maximum base defense + 1. Let's take
Skin of the Vipermagi
for example.
Serpentskin Armor
has a defense range of 111-126, so SotV always has 279 defense ([126 + 1] * 2.2). However, when you upgrade an item this base defense is rerolled randomly, meaning it's not a fixed amount.

Now let's take a fairly famous example of an upgraded armor having lower defense than the original,
Vampire Gaze
. A
Grim Helm
has a range of 60-125 defense, so Vgaze always has 252 defense ([125 + 1] * 2). When you upgrade it to a
Bone Visage
, the base defense randomly rolls from 100-157, so anything under 126 will have worse defense while increasing the level and strength requirements of it. Yikes haha.

So just keep this in mind when you're upgrading armor where the elite base can roll less minimum defense than the maximum defense of the exceptional base (or upgrading normal to exceptional, etc. :P). Luckily this isn't the case for weapons since they have fixed base damage.

I actually had a custom graphic made for this exact inquiry. See below:

@Th3ory and all - someone requested that we add data fields for items so that people can contribute data just like this ^ for the items' defense value if upped to the elite version, and the defense value if upped to the elite version and also E-bugged.

I'm adding this in the upcoming patch 0.3 but I want to know first of all if anyone actually has a reliable source for all of this data.

The image you posted is a start Th3ory, but I'm sure that there are many more values out there.

@Udyret @
Stormlash
any ideas on where we might get this data from? Is there a spreadsheet out there?

One last question th3: why is it that some items on the graphic there only have values for 'upped' but not ethereal, whilst some have both? For example I can see there that
Toothrow
has both values, but
Twitchthroe
does not. Is it because some items just can't be ethereal?

Edit 2: Also which item types does this data apply to? Are there any item types that cannot be upped or ebugged? Just trying to figure out how to code all this.

@Teebling I dunno about a spreadsheet but
Arreat Summit
has this and I quote:

"Ethereal
Most types of armor or weapon, even one with magical properties, can be Ethereal. Bows and Crossbows cannot be Ethereal. These items appear translucent in the Inventory, and when equipped, they appear translucent on the character wielding them. Their ethereal nature gives them an improved fundamental ability. However, they have decreased Durability and cannot be repaired.

- Weapons: +50% base damage.
- Armor: +50% base defense

You can place
Zod
Runes (Indestructible) in some Ethereal Items to prevent them from being destroyed.
Ethereal items lose durability at a slower rate than normal items.
The durability for Ethereal items is calculated as follows: (Normal durability divided by 2) + 1. Example: An Ethereal
Giant Conch
will have (30/2)+1 = 15+1 = 16 durability, provided it is not a failed Set or Failed Unique.
Ethereal items spawn with full durability (albeit reduced maximum durability).
Durability (maximum durability) values observed ingame agree with the following empirical formulae,
Ethereal non-magic, magic, rare, or unique item: Durability = [normal durability / 2] + 1
Ethereal unique item with +durability (dur) as a magic property: Durability = [normal durability / 2] + 1 + dur
Ethereal Superior item with 'Increase Maximum Durability X%' (X = dur%, 10 to 15): Durability = [[normal durability / 2] * (100 + dur%)/100] + 1

Upgrading ethereal rare or unique items (using the proper
Horadric Cube
recipes) forces maximum durability to equal the normal maximum durability of the base item. Example: Ethereal
Hone Sundan
will have 15 maximum durability as a
Yari
, but 28 maximum durability as a
Ghost Spear
(upgraded). The +durability magic property of the unique items that have it carries over. Example: Ethereal
Duriel's Shell
(+100 durability) will have 126 maximum durability as a
Cuirass
, but 150 maximum durability as a
Great Hauberk
(upgraded).

Failed Set (double durability magic) and Failed Unique (triple durability rare) items spawn with twice and thrice the normal durability, respectively, hence:

Ethereal Failed Set: normal durability + 1
Ethereal Failed Unique: [normal durability * 3/2] + 1

Note: '[]' denotes rounding down (calculations are done with integers, there are no fractions at any step).

Broken Ethereal Items sell for 1 Gold.
Items that spawn as indestructible can not be ethereal at the same time. Hence, most elite unique items that are indestructable will never become ethereal.
After being sold to a merchant, Ethereal items don't appear in the merchant's trade screen.
Armor strength requirements are lowered by 10, and weapon strength/dexterity requirement is lowered by 10, when they are Ethereal.
Ethereal Items do not lose Durability on Hirelings.
Magic, Rare, and Unique Items can be Ethereal but Imbuing will not make a non-Ethereal item become Ethereal.
Ethereal items CAN be Imbued, and still be Ethereal after the imbue."

Maybe we can use the formulas somehow and automatize the process?

The only unique items that can't be ethereal are those that are naturally indestructible (with some deliberate exceptions). Set items are never ethereal.

That graphic may not be complete. It doesn't have ethereal
Sandstorm Trek
in its elite section, for example.

That would be ideal yeah. If anyone can share what they know on how upping/ebugging is calculated in-game then we can maybe replicate it.

Alternatively, we'd need a list or spreadsheet somewhere detailing the values of each eligible item providing its max possible defense value after being upgraded to its elite base version, and the max possible defense value if it is also ebugged.

For weapons, I suppose we'd want a similar list but only determining the max possible 1h damage and max possible 2h damage as a result of being upped to the elite base version.

How about base items?

Almost all base items can roll ethereal. Exceptions are bows, crossbows, and phase blades.

In your opinion which of these do you think we should use as the resource of choice for populating the DB?

Obviously the data has to be accurate to 1.14, but also we need to make sure it has all the data we want available (which one offers the most?)

7

Edit: I've just looked through all of them and here are my thoughts...

Ideally I'd love to be able to just calculate this with PHP automatically for each page and avoid having to store static values in the DB at all. However, because magical bonuses such as % enhanced defense and 'adds X-Y damage' etc. are incorporated into the calculation, it makes doing it this way sort of impossible...

What I think we should do is make another spreadsheet like @SudoDragon's one for skills that uses the calculations mentioned in those d2jsp topics which are well described and have examples. This would allow contributors to copy across the min/max values for the following:

Armor:
  • Min/max defense after upping to Elite version
  • Min/max defense if ethereal
  • Min/max defense if ethereal AND upped to Elite version
Weapons:
  • 1h damage after upping to Elite version
  • 2h damage after upping to Elite version
  • Throwing damage after upping to Elite version
  • 1h damage if ethereal
  • 2h damage if ethereal
  • Throwing damage if ethereal
  • 1h damage if ethereal AND upped to Elite version
  • 2h damage if ethereal AND upped to Elite version
  • Throwing damage if ethereal AND upped to Elite version
Am I missing anything from that list guys and does anyone want to tackle this?

Good question re: reliable source. I think if you use a system of checking multiple sources to take a weighted approach and it is cross-validated it is likely accurate. While manual, the checks and balances are warranted.

So the reason my graphic reads the way it does @Teebling is based on the most commonly upped items that I tend to see folks use. For example, Twitch can be ethereal, but normally is not upp'd as it is use for LLD. So call it more subjective in my opinion based on experience, but by no means is this list gospel or necessarily true for others.

Looks like many others answered your second edit about uppable/ebugging etc.

This is phenomenal to read. First thing I think is 'the pros come out of the woodwork', second is 'this is a great team'.
