Description

Someone on Reddit claimed Ormus with 15% lightning damage and +3 to Nova is BIS for the Nova sorc. Needless to say, there has been vehement opposition.

What do the experts think of this expression, and why would anyone in their right mind say this?

Just like everything else with D2, "best" and "BiS" qualifiers depend on what your individual definition of those terms are. Speed? Survivability? Raw damage?

+3 Nova Ormus is BiS for raw damage.
But to make up for that loss of FCR you need to either give up an SoJ for a gg 10FCR ring or splurge for a 2/20 amulet. Both of which can be very expensive.

My Nova Sorc has a Vipermagi, but if you can do with less FCR and no magic smage reduction, which is suoer helpful, and no all res and you want to go all damage, then a +3 Ormus with a good light damage row and a facet or a Guardian's Thunder is best, yes.

I’m currently running an Ormus with +15% lightning damage and +3 to Nova. You can really notice the damage increase compared to a Vipermagi, but you also feel a bit more fragile. To keep both SoJs, a 2/20 amulet is a must if Infinity is used, which also increases the cost.

Have a look at this: https://www.reddit.com/r/diablo2/commen ... from_2184/
In the excel table you can see the main builds ordered by overall damage to immunes from left to right. This tells you about damage, not about survivability or quality of life. You can asses these by considering the author used BiS items to keep the 105 FCR though.

A perfect faceted Ormus Robes is about 10% more damage compared to a faceted Vipermagi, so it wins if you're after only damage.

That said, Vipermagi's MDR is very helpful for your Energy Shield, as well as the FCR and Resistances. For me? It's the best all rounder, and significantly cheaper too.

It was mentioned several times already but it's quite simple really.

Go with vipermagi, max resists, easy fcr, mdr.

When you have a 2/20 amulet and some allres small charms, feel free to do +3 Nova, 15% Ormus with +5/-5 jewel inside. Resists don't matter for Energy Shield purposes, only for the 5% of damage that goes through. Just max Lightning for soul packs and Poison ( Sandstorm Trek).

If you are running WSK, keep max health above max mana, so you don't get hit by blood magic curse.

I dont understand logic here.

facet +5/-5 res

do you mean -5 res not work?

He means that the all res on Vipermagi is not very important for a Nova Sorc, since she only needs Poison Res. The -5 on the Facet is working, of course.

This will not be possible for a true ES sorc. And in WSK, only Baal applies Blood curse. That's one of the rare cases where you might need a Rev Potion.

Ormus is a trap.

+1 Skills from Vipermagi gives you +1 to Lightning Mastery (+12% LSD), offsetting the value of +LSD from Ormus.

You'll also need to compensate for the lower FCR with a 2/20 amulet, meaning the added damage from Ormus is now mitigated even further in lieu of a 3/10.

Lastly, the MDR provided by Vipermagi cannot be understated. It makes a big difference for your survivability because of how damage is calculated with Energy Shield. Ormus is slightly more sheet damage, but Vipermagi is a much better QoL.

All true, but Ormus still wins the damage game easily. +1 to Light Mastery is less than the light damage on a well-rolled Ormus and +3 Nova is much more damage than the +1 you might have on a 3-10 amu (compared to a 2-20). I myself use Vipermagi because I like the mdr and I need the fcr because I have dropped 1 SoJ and Magefist for Frostburn and a good 10 FCR ring.
But Ormus definitely is the BIS damage armor, the damage advantage is substantial, not just "slightly more". ChoongZilla's 10% more seem realistic to me.

Each point into Lightning Mastery is +12% Lightning Skill Damage.

+LSD is additive. Ormus is more damage, you're right, but the benefit is marginal at best.

Yeah right, it's 12% light damage versus 10-15%. Most of Ormus' damage increase comes from the +3 Nova

Effectively, we are looking at the following:

Vipermagi + 3/10
+4 Nova (+4 Skills)
+48% LSD (+4 Skills)

Ormus + 2/20
+5 Nova (+3 Nova, +2 Skills)
+39% LSD (+15% LSD, +2 Skills)

In no way does this equate to +10% DPS. Realistically we are evaluating a 1% gain.

If you are using vipermagi, why would you even consider going for a 3/10? You are losing so much potential by using that you might as well go for Ormus + 2/20. Plus you are losing 2 skills from Frozen Armor and Warmth with 3/10 on top.

2sorc/20 Ormus 2sorc/10 vipermagi 3light/10 vipermagi

Because my build doesn't need any of the amulet affixes unless you want MF. Finding a perfect Nova Ormus and a 2/20 w/ perfect affixes would be wildly expensive for such an incremental gain.
