Description

Hi everyone!

In the need of something fast to farm, my 2nd char is a frost sorc, with blizzard. Playing softcore non ladder.

At the guides that I found in google usually nobody uses points in Energy Shield, but in Hell and with my lack of experience I tried it and it's helping me quite a lot to survive.

In theory Energy Shield sends only a % of the damage to mana, in my case is like a 61%, but what really happens is that my health globe is almost always intact (except for crushing blow) which is weird...

I saw some advice saying that even using Energy Shield you must put all points in vitality (that's how I currently have it, except for str for equipment), but knowing that the amount of mana regenerated is increased the more mana you have, and that with Insight (plus 85% mana regen) my entire mana pool is restored in a blink, what's the reason to still advice to put all points in vitality?

Wouldn't it make more sense to put all points to energy instead + max Energy Shield + max Telekinesis?

That will Sacrifice points in the cold tree but for now I have more damage than I need (+11 skills from equipment) and I'm still at lvl 70. In 5 lvls I will equip a cold sunder and I hopefuly won't care about the damage done by my merc anymore.

As I already used 1 respec I'm afraid to experiment myself with stuff I don't have much idea yet ^_^u

Many thanks!

in Diablo 2 couple of things are certain; Always go for Vitality and just enough str/dex to reach gear limits, Def matters very little as it is the resistances which are most important. And I had a third one but completely forgot about it already.

Energy Shield didnt block all dmg so if you have low hp which sorcs usually have; youll die before the Energy Shield prevents any dmg.

Yes

This is the recommendation on the endgame builds that use Energy Shield

A build with Energy Shield is generally something you don't want to half-ass. You either go full tilt into Energy Shield and max energy + Energy Shield + Telekinesis as Fredkid mentioned. OR you put zero points into them and max vitality. If you go the Energy Shield route DO NOT put your spare points into vitality.

There are quite a few builds where this is simply not true. ES sorc for example.

If you are offering my asking for price, please feel free to add me on bnet or xbox, you do not need to wait for my confirmation.

Hi!

I've tested out a lot of different types of sorc builds. Started off as a Chain Lightning sorc, reset and did a Blizzard sorc, reset and did a Nova - static sorc. Final reset I went for Frozen Orb sorc and not switching to anything else. I liked the cold sorc with blizzard, just had problem hitting enemies in tight spaces. Because the blizzard goes from the sky then goes a little angle horizontal downwards. So you can't hit enemies close to walls. Frozen Orb makes up for this especially.
Lately I've been testing Energy Shield aswell. (Even tho im doing a Cold-Fire sorc I don't want to put any points in the lightning tree) But the ES is just too good protection to not use.
This is what I do... I have a yellow Wand in my stash that gives +3 Energy Shield. And I just put enough points extra that I can spare into Telekenisis to drag the mana reduction from 200% to 125% and that's good enough for me. Because I don't want to set 4 points extra just to reach the Energy Shield talent.
I set like 120 total points into Vitality and all the rest (about 320) total points into energy. Making my HP at 595 points and MP 2040
Gear to give me this is double SoJ & Frostburn for more into mana pool.
I can say myself that she can take a beating! And I don't even use a merc with Insight. I figured no need as I'm doing a Froz orb/ Fire Wall sorc im maxing Warmth for the extra FW dmg

Tho one thing still kills my sorc pretty easy... The monsters crit poison dmg. So max out poison resistance cuz this dmg cuts thru ur ES. I couldn't get it maxed so I just have a Belt slot with antidotes, just in case.
All other elemental damage can reduce ur mana super quick, because elemental resistance is counted after the ES has reduced its dmg

I play RotW non-ladder SC only, from EU but can trade in all regions

Well ofc it is base depended, but usually that is the case. Even Energy Shield builds need vitality unless they exactly plan to go full on mana. I wouldnt.

I recommend being cautious when making absolute statements in D2.

These two statements are at odds with each other.

People asking self-professed "noob questions" might not know there are exceptions to something, especially when its described as an absolute. It can be quite confusing to the uninformed.

I don't want you to feel like I am picking on you, or making a mountain out of a mole-hill. But people will take incomplete advice, not knowing there are caveats or exceptions, and then get mad, frustrated, or annoyed that the advice they followed isn't working.

The closest we can come to an absolute in D2 is that for subjective advice there are no absolutes - we can always find exceptions and outliers.

A 1pt ES build can work well with balanced vita/energy. Like my full Tal ES sorc (maxed TK, 65% ES, 2.1K life, 2.1K mana, maxed res) is basically immortal (this is my go to char for mini-ubers).

https://maxroll.gg/d2/d2planner/d01pj0w2

However, it's true that I wouldn't go ES at all unless I can spare enough points for maxed TK. For a cold sorc, either pure orb (then full ES), or maybe blizz (without orb at all) with 1pt Cold Mastery, 1pt ES and wielding Doom (but i doubt you could have enough stats to worth it over vita).

I agree, that's why I said "generally something you don't want to half-ass". There are exceptions to everything in D2

OP
All your answers are immensely informative, thanks a lot! There's quite some things you said I have to investigate to understand, but with all this information in the next days I'll figure out if I'll respec or not and how... but it looks like until I get a lightning sunder in my hands I'm not going to be switching to Nova.
