Description

Enhances your shield with divine power.

Holy Shield
increases
Smite
damage for each point. This increase is added to the shield's base damage before any +% Enhanced Damage is applied.

Holy Shield
is not a Passive skill, it is similar to the Sorceress'
Frozen Armor
. To create a
Holy Shield
, cast the spell. It will last until it wears off which will be determined by how many skill points you have placed in
Holy Shield
.

Paladins who use shields should consider this skill. Additional defense and increased blocking are always something to be desired, and this skill can still be used in combination with his Auras, and other Combat skills. Furthermore, though the skill makes no mention of this, it decreases the Paladin's already speedy block animation to a mere 2 frames (or 1 frame with 86% or more Faster Block Rate), dramatically reducing the possibility of a "block-lock"

You may not want to use this skill in combination with the
Thorns
. When using
Thorns
, you want the monsters to hit you so that they will be damaged by
Thorns
. However,
Holy Shield
makes it more difficult for monsters to hit you.

Holy Shield
is very useful to increase blocking on shields with low blocking. You may find a great rare, or unique shield with low blocking. The lack of blocking on the shield may make you think twice about using it, but with
Holy Shield
you can raise the chance to block and still use this shield.

Lore

To a Paladin, the shield is a symbol of his faith.

Particularly devout Paladins can channel their faith into their shields, bolstering its defensive value with holy energy.

The purer his faith, the greater his defense.

Holy Shield
has a hidden mechanic that reduces the block frames of the Paladin to only 2 frames.

That means that with zero Faster Block Rate any Paladin using
Holy Shield
can block up to 12 times per second.

Reaching 86% Faster Block Rate would reduce the block frames to 1.

Considering the default 2-frame-block is already great, investing in such FBR value is usually detrimental given the difficulty to achieve such stats and the gear choices involved.

Unlike previous versions of D2, in D2:R
Holy Shield
cannot roll as a staff mod on Scepters.

@Knappogue That's true in LoD where if the
Scepter
selected a "forbidden staffmod" 6 or 7 times in a row (it would reroll to try to pick a different skill each time) then it'd forcibly drop that skill anyways, this was silently patched in D2R and "forbidden staffmods" will never drop (they increased the amount of rerolls to Infinity).
