Description

One of the new patch 2.4 Runewords, Flickering Flame uses a 3 socketed
Helm
base and is well-suited to Fire Iron Wolves, and Fire Druids/Sorceresses.

As of 2.5, this runeword is often paired with
Flame Rift
, as the runeword's
Resist Fire
aura will offset the resistance penalty of the charm and the runeword's -10-15% to Enemy Fire Resistance will augment the charm's Sundering property.

Through 2.4 PTR testing this also works extremely well on an Auradin setup.

Resist Fire
Aura (85% at lvl 4 - 106% at lvl 8) can compensate the lack of Fire Resist from Spirit.

Currently theory crafting a Martial Arts Assassin build that specialized in
Tiger Strike
with
Dragon Tail
Finisher. Those familiar with
Dragon Tail
know that it takes the attack’s physical damage and adds to it a fire component aoe explosion equal to a multiple of the physical damage. An attack with 7,000 physical damage can equal 50,000 damage or more in aoe
Fireball
like explosion. With
Amplify Damage
first reducing a monsters physical resistance and a sunder charm plus facets, Phoenix, and or Infinity lowing a monsters fire resistance, the possible damage outcome can be in the hundreds of thousands. If you use Flickering Flame as your
Helm
, you completely offset the fire res issues of a sundering charm, and gain a big boost to
Dragon Tail
since it’s a fire based attack. Couple these with dual Phoenix and a the reaper’s toll merc, or Phoenix
Lacerator
and Infinity merc to trounce even p8 baddies in a single
Dragon Tail
finisher, regardless of players count — uniques and bosses excluded.

Besides the Fire Spells of the Sorceress the following skills benefit from +x To Fire Skills

Amazon Assassin Druid Necromancer Paladin

Flickering Flame was ladder only during Patch 2.4 and Patch 2.5 (Ladder Season 1 & 2). Since Patch 2.6 (Ladder Season 3) it is possible to create Flickering Flame in non-ladder.

A comparable alternative for Druids is
Ravenlore
.

Remember that you gain the benefits of another character's
Resist Fire
aura.
So you may put Flickering Flame on your Merc to gain 85-106% Fire Resistant without dedicating any equipment in yourself to protect you from fire 😉
(Thanks @uuee for the tip 👊👍)

But don't forget that only one aura of each type may affect the character (so no much reason to put Flickering Flame on you and on your Merc 😉)

This runeword can be an attractive option for summoner classes, placed on an act 1 or act 3 fire merc, since minions can gain immunity against fire. Very useful if you are planning to run
Travincal
or
Chaos Sanctuary
regularly.

Another (more obvious) use is for fire classes (Sorceress, Druid, Assassin) to counteract the penalty of
Flame Rift
.

The best use of this item is on a Dragondin, no doubt. This little runeword is able to render all party members and mercs almost immune to fire, if you have maxed
Resist Fire
by yourself! Absolutely amazing!
