Description

This formula changes the base item type from exceptional to elite version. For example,
Ghost Armor
is upgraded to a
Dusk Shroud
.

This does NOT convert the item to the Elite Unique version of the Unique item. So you cannot, for example, use this formula to transform
The Spirit Shroud
into
Ormus' Robes
. Unique item bonuses remain the same; only the item it's based on is upgraded. This can also be used to upgrade Ethereal items.

Socketed items will remain socketed after upgrading.

Armor refers to any sort of armor, including helms, boots, belts, gloves and shields.

How to calculate level requirements when upgrading your rare/set/unique items:

Upgrading from normal to exceptional: +5 levels to base req
Upgrading from exceptional to elite: +7 levels to base req
Upgrading from normal to elite: +12 levels to base req

If anything increases the Level Req. to something higher than base req, the +5/7/12 are calculated off the higher req. For ex:

Socketing a Rune or Jewel that has a higher Level Req. than the base item? Then calculation is based on the socketed item.

Does an affix force the Level Req. to be higher than the base item? Then calculation is based on the affix.

Does the item being upgraded have a Level Req. higher than the base item? Then calculation is based on the item’s Level Req.

If you are planning to upgrade anything check before the strength and dexterity requeirements of the Elite version of the base item. Important to do this to check if yout char ans merc can use the upgraded item. Some items worth upgrading, others don't.

Since the defense of the new base is rolled randomly, it can happen that you have less defense after upgrading than before.
An example for this is
Arreat's Face
. The exceptional base has 121 base def (max 120 from
Slayer Guard
+1) but the upgraded elite base can have 117-168 base def. With perfect 200% ed you have 363 def before the upgrade and 351-504 after upgrading.
