I don't believe that the premise here is that they paid for a service. I think the premise is that help was offered where they couldn't do it on their own. It is possible to steal someone else's drop. It goes like this... someone kills something... you sneak in and take the drop. Simple as that. They created the drop, you got it instead.
Drops belong to whomever picks them up first IMO. They don't "belong" to anyone. They used to belong to the monster, then they belong to the Ground before someone grabs them. Game is too fun to get upset about missed drop pickups. You can always find that stuff in solo play.

I mean anyone can do what they please in a multiplayer lobby, obviously, but lets be honest and truthful with what we're talking about lol. Obviously something you dropped from a monster you killed would be assumed to be yours. This is pretty basic etiquette that applies across most things in life. You can ofc personally think it's okay / not a big deal / whatever rationale but why pretend this discussion is about anything else lol

And the "drops are a free for all" sentiment is in no way a rule, at best it's descriptive of what tends to occur in public games but it's not at all like a special inexorable part of diablo 2. People can wish and assert that it is an unwritten rule to justify their unsavoury behaviour but it doesn't make it true. Lol

In a regular game, in practice, drops are a free for all. I don't think I've ever seen someone NOT try to grab a good item.
I do find the trailer comes and grabs your item annoying, and I do think proper etiquette should be that if you clearly were not involved with the kill, you shouldn't grab the item if it is a clear high desirability item (high/mid rune, good unique).
More commonly, it's Chaos and it's hard to say who killed what.
For this specific case however, the "help me kill this boss", I would say:
1) This already happens with people requesting help on this site with ubers and uber ancients. And NO ONE thinks the helper should take the prize (jewel). They are there to to "help", they are not there for hire.
Of course in this case the work split is a bit different, it is much more time investment to find the keys/statues than to do the actual uber fight.
To me the quest drop is kind of in between. It's hard for me to see either side having an iron clad expectation of what is fair.
And also - if they aren't helping to kill the boss, how are they sniping the loot? Unless it is a sorc with TK, you would be able to beat them to it.

The drops are a free-for-all. That's just how the game was designed. Hate the game, not the player.

Help is typically a selfless act. If your help is conditional, you should communicate that to the other party and come to an agreement.
