Description
The project originally started as a way to bring back features from Lord of Destruction that never made it into Resurrected, but it has since grown into a larger set of tools for both players and mod creators.
Some of the features already working include:
- TCP/IP multiplayer
- An Open Battle.net-style game browser where players can list and discover hosted games
- Automatic port forwarding on supported routers
- An in-game option and mod selector
- A backup feature for your characters
- JSON-based Memory patches
- Native plugin support
- A developer console, debug menus, logging tools, and other features for mod development
Memory patches are simple JSON files that can apply byte changes without requiring a DLL. For anything more advanced, D2RLoader can load native plugins capable of adding complete gameplay features, such as Charm Inventory.
Plugins and patches can also be included directly inside a mod, allowing mod authors to distribute everything their mod needs without requiring players to install each component separately.
My goal is not to turn D2RLoader into one massive all-in-one mod. I want it to provide the common low-level functionality that mod creators would otherwise need to implement themselves, while making advanced mods easier to install, develop, and maintain.
D2RLoader is intended exclusively for modded, offline, and TCP/IP play. Official Battle.net multiplayer and all related online functionality are completely disabled while D2RLoader is active.
The project is still actively being developed, so I’d be interested in hearing what features people miss from the original game, as well as what kinds of tools would be useful to other mod creators.
I’m also looking for some help with the project. In particular, I could use someone with an eye for web design to help improve the D2RLoader website, along with translators who would be interested in bringing the loader to more languages. If either of those sounds like something you’d like to help with, feel free to reach out!
