Guardian Angel vs. Fortitude
GA
Pros: increased resist caps
Cons: Not much else except AR to demons
Fort
Pros: 25-30% resists, +5 lightning Cap, +300% enhanced damage (no idea how that is calculated on a body armor), +X to life
Cons: Doesn't reach that 90% resist Cap that GA does
I have GA and I happen to have a nice Eth 4os Wire Fleece for Fortitude, so I'm on the fence about it.

Can be used to make Runewords:
Guardian Angel for Travincal runs, that's it. Using one on my barb's barb who is just an aura-on-a-stick.

Double Last Wish for lvl 34 might aura. If you don't need your merc's offense, GA with Vamp Gaze both Um'd makes for an extremely tanky merc.
Agreed.
Either Guardian Angel + Vampire Gaze for elemental runs or Shaftstop + Vampire Gaze for everything else is the go-to for survivability.

I am currently planning out Act 1 merc with Mist or Faith + GA/Fortitude + Kira/Vamp, but also waiting to see what happens with demons in the next patch. Since both Concentration and Fanaticism might be possible rolls, perhaps should think more about Might auras from merc.
Good thinking. I currently have GA and Kira on my Act 2 merc, but he continues to cost me 50K. I will start looking for a vamp gaze and Um.
My Act 1 merc survived all the way through Hell with only a couple of revives. I'm thinking of going back to her for a Faith or Mist runeword on a Hydra Bow. She was using Edge on a Spider Bow previously, and while I don't depend on her offense, she actually did well sniping mobs coming from the back end, so I'm curious what her damage output would be with a nice bow and Fortitude. But an expensive bow with auras is only good on a live merc...
For mercs that don't have strong leech (like A1 or A2 with Pride) I tend to prefer Shaftstop + Vampire Gaze + Um, A1 need 2 Um but A2 get capped with a single Um, if I was richer I would do Ber for the second socket. With the exception of hydras and ubers, usually they die only if ganged up by a lot of melee monsters. It's rare for them to die by elemental damage. That's my experience at least.
Same here, although i use a Vex'ed Kira's Guardian instead of the Vampire Gaze. No need for leech with Last Wish, as Life Tap triggers very reliable

A2 merc survival skill with Cure and Obedience are pretty good. For life leeching Skin of the Flyer. Not for trav farming, but works in most places. Or Chains of Honor if you have it and don't need at the moment. I am not rich enough yet to make it in Eth base specially for merc.
And if you are really poor there is always Kelpie Snare +TalRasha face .
Also pay attention to Coven runeword and Darksight Helm (if you use no other curses). While cheap they increase your damage or surviivability. Every mob who hit your merc gets hit. Coven Works for A5 merc with lawbringers too.

ethereal Guardian Angel or regular one? Does it matter?
it doesnt matter because your merc is moving around and defense actually, not so good.
Please be aware, all my trade is in non ladder d2r. Not warlock.
Spells will hit your merc no matter what his defense is. Some melee and ranges attacks will not reach him/her.
Sure Eth is better than normal. But if your given merc dies on some content often, Ethereal will not be a game changer.
