Description
Two weeks ago my partner and I started the new Ladder with two Warlocks. I chose the Summoner path, my partner went the fire route, which she started to dislike as we arrived in hell. Yeah baby, no Sunders anymore, she is more a casual player and there's nothing wrong with it. Meantime, we respecced her to Echoing Strike, which is a blast. We found an Ethereal Edge on our playthrough, which proved to be an impressive weapon of choice. 20k damage per hit... This is already more than my fully stuffed nonladder Strafezon.
And I fight for my life with my only 3 minions + merc. I can tell you.
Playing the Summoner is fun, but it is way more demanding than I thought it would be. As a Necro or Druid you may lean back and just enjoy the show. The Warlock is in permanent panic, dodging enemies (a.k.a. staying alive at all costs), repositioning sigils and minions, keeping the buffs active and an eye on the stupid guy with the high salary requirement.
The motive of centering the class around a bound minion is exciting, does it mean that you are playing some kind of softcore-hardcore hybrid and get attached to your companion in a couple of ways. My partner dislikes this concept tho. The Warlock is a "high risk - high reward" situation, this is not for everyone. I consider it an extra "drop mechanic", adding a lot of thrill to the gameplay.
But coming to the rewards... holy moly. Yesterday, after I finally got an idea of how to correctly bind a monster (you don't wanna know how many times we desperately tried to bind animals or undead and how close we were on writing a letter of complaint to the Blizzard Main Administration), I swapped from an Act 1 spear chick with Conviction to this monster of giant curse-spewing extra fast anabolic tree swinger guy. And if you guess this is like powerlevel 6 to powerlevel 100, you aren't even close.
So it came to be that I had my first Diablo Clone occurence as I was soloing some newly conquered terror zones today. My partner wasn't available at this precise moment, so I had to confront the Big Daddy in all my selffound garbage glory: Spirit, Lidless Wall, Tarnhelm, Authority, Nightsmoke, Nagelring, Tearhaunch, Venom Grip and a mess of yellow scrap metal. I quickly screwed a helm full of Ral runes together and expected to lose my new minion in a few seconds.
And I won. I fucking won!!
The fight took me 11 minutes and you can watch me wetting my pants here:
If I had my partner at my side, this fight would be over in 2 minutes or so.
I don't think the Summoner Warlock is that op. He is different, it is a fresh and rewarding gameplay, and he deserves his place aside of Necromancer and Druid. Can't wait to make a good Rogue build out of this...
But the Eldtritch tree definitely is! What's your thoughts on this?
