That would be absolutely brilliant.
Sadly, I don't have enough hope left in Blizz to give either one of those a chance.

(Prove me wrong Blizz! I DARE YOU!)

My prediction: New medium-sized patch with balance changes including updates to underpowered set/unique items and rebalancing of runewords, and a tease of more news later this year. Then an expansion announcement at blizzcon to capitalize on new china player base. I have Faith in matthew cederquist.
7
My guess: Microtransactions such as skins and more chest tabs. Some balance changes, maybe some new low level sets to make it up for that Chinese-exclusive.

And i'm hoping that's it, so they don't ruin the game.

I think Blizzard has no real intention to make D2R better. Since it is a direct competitor to D4. Of course, it could earn more money with D2R with loot filters, specialized stash tabs etc, but that would only mean that many people will have lots of more fun with D2R and never touch D4. Would be good for us D2 players but bad for Blizzard, as long as they don't fully commit to a Path of Exile financing system., which they will not do for D2R.

I don't expect much from this patch, but I hope I get proven wrong.

In my estimation the intersection of D2R and D4 players is very small which means that most D2R players are not very interested in D4 (there are some exceptions of course ;-)). Therefore, as long as D4 does not become some D2 (and vice versa) I think it is nearly impossible to get dedicated long term D2 players to switch to D4.

Btw, my sons watched some playthrough videos of D4 some time ago and there reaction was: "Hey Dad, is this really the newer game? This looks so repetetive and boring..." 😁

After a 20 year break from D2 I started playing D2R in 2024 with my sons (9 and 10 years old)

Stackable items would be a wonderful QoL change but they'd make more money leaving items unstackable and selling stash tabs instead.

Other things I've heard on the grapevine - potentially new class, but not in this February release. Balance updates are being whispered about.
I'm in for stackable items, finally end to my runes Chaos...but for real money? I think we'll stay a while and listen on 11 February

I agree with you. Some Diablo 2 players are not likely to be interested in Diablo 4. I can say that D4 was not for me. And there is no possible way for Diablo 4 to become like Diablo 2. The story lines so are different and too many decades have gone under the bridge(Generations). My personal opinion here: Modern games simply are not the same, are not as good.

I thought I could make a good comment for Diablo 4... I love the books, the Lore and some parts of the game...? But honestly, I played the Diablo 4 Pre-Launch. Not sure what they called it back then...? I deleted the Diablo 4 Pre-Launch and I will never look back. I've read up on the
Lilith
Lore in Diablo 4. Of course, this does interest me, so reading about D4 versus playing D4? Yeah. I'll stick to the reading.

Agreed, I don't think Blizzard is worried about losing players from D4 to D2R. Players who play D4 are not moving to D2R and viceversa -- no matter what changes occur for either game. Also, I will be surprised if any microtranactions become part of D2R. D2R is not built with microtransactions in mind. Remember, not even D4 charges for stash tabs. If stash tabs and inventory changes come, I think they will be purchasable in-game with
Gold
or free outright. The only way microtransactions come to D2R, is if Blizzard decided to add content in future years for D2R, and generate a new source of revenue with microtranactions and expansions (obviously, highly unlikely).

D2 has not been built with microtransactions in mind, yet they have been an essential part of D2 since the very beginning - as external RMT (and, related to it, botting). Blizzard first gave up dealing with the issue (in D2), then embraced it (in D3 as AH and later as microtransactions in the Chinese version). In case of the latter, they are not limited to cosmetics; they are P2W. And since there are no cosmetics in D2, it is not that far-fetched to have P2W microtransactions (boosts, runes?) introduced to D2.
I wish I'm wrong...

First of all I'd be glad if they added just a bit more space for char creation. The current max capacity for chars is 24, which I've already reached. A handful of low mules and then 19 chars above the dlvl 78 or way above the clvl 90 mark. Am I not crazy :-) !? Still not totally averse to the idea of creating a few more chars.

Furthermore new content in the form of a new act, especially new Quests, monsters or tighter monster density and what not would be nice. Additionally some new Unique items and/or balance already existing ones to have some alternative to predominant runewords would be nice. Or trying to lower the requirements for sets like Heaven's Brethren. A set which is almost never used. Maybe also give it a big boost. Add new sets :-) 2 more char slots... Can appreciate that if it is free. Another interesting thing would be to give the "Standart of Heros" from Ubers some special use as opposed to simply function as an ornament of sorts. What else... Synergy changes? Make less used skills more potent? I'm open for changes that don't mess up the d2r mechanics as such.

Having more teamplay would be interesting, too. This might sound weird but why not adding an optional fuction during game creation, where you can check a box or not, if you want
Teleport
to be disabled in that current game or not, in order to avoid people from straying too far from each other by not being able to keep the fast pace. For a more relaxed teamgaming. Especially in early games I don't want to be rushed and want some relaxed playing style. This idea may sound weird or unacceptable for some, but as I said... Optional.

Some of the mentioned ideas may sound like a Dream. But let's hope for the best.

One last thing I wanted to add: As far as I know some of the old Blizzard North guys have gathered together under the label Moonbeast Productions, in order to come forth with developing a new arpg, in case you are interested.

Peace.

I don't get the point of bringing up stealing attention from D4, they both make money for the same company this isn't some kind of zero-sum game.

Any new items are better than nothing. Any new levels are better than nothing. Any new item fixes is better than nothing. Just look at the last patches.. they'll add 10 new items, 8 will be complete garbage but 2 like Curse or Mosaic will be legit good, even Plague is pretty descent actually. But that's just it, I hope Blizzard just goes brave and tries anything, risk more crazy items, make an Uber Cow Level where every single cow has like 3 different mods all random and deal double health and damage, anything at this point.

Well, bringing back the Mac gamers that have been cut off for two weeks or so would be the greatest improvement.
After last update d2r cannot run on macOS with wine or any other stuff, giving many of us an unplanned break from the game. So yeah, my expectations are high 😅

It still runs on Nvidia GeForce NOW on Mac. But you have to pay for that. The free version is only good for an hour unfortunately.

All my
Blood Ring
and
Caster Amulet
priced at
Ist
or below are now FREE.

After paying for the game once (or maybe twice, counting the original LoD), when it came to pay again - whether it’s GeForce now or crossover (which fails to run d2r too right now) - I chose real life :)
It’s day 15 or so and counting, I do miss the game, but you can call me old fashioned

As for the update, I’d be excited if there’s a new class or something, but I expect stuff like paid extra stash tabs or other things you can buy ingame for real money. Sad, pessimistic, but maybe it’s an effect of not playing for two weeks :)

D2r can no longer compete with D4. It's POE2.

Anyway, if they really do implement an integrated MTX into the game code, then i'm all for it...so long as it's justifiable and in return it keeps the title updated rather than deadware. When was the last time a real update was rolled out? For them to make an announcement should stand for something, bearing in mind that their real marketing is in pushing out Hatred end Apr. .

And since u mentioned Path, GGG runs both of their titles concurrently, with new seasons and content riding on each when one ends. Also, purchased QOL functionalities are brought forward & shared so I know i'll be getting twice my $$$ worth regardless of 1 or 2...no regrets there both still on my SSD.

Can't say the same for D4 tho.. .:P

Expect trade delays due to new update on POE2 starting 29 Aug

I totally feel you there. I play mainly on Xbox. When I play on my laptop it's strictly for trading. I couldn't imaging actually playing on the Nvidia service.
